Week 21 Waiver Wire: Catchers

We're in the last full week of August. Soon the talk will turn to Autumn and pennant races. Halloween gear will be in stores before we know it. Oh, who are we kidding? Stores have already started pushing the giant bags of trick or treating candy, knowing that we'll probably pig out on them well before Oct. 31 and then sheepishly have to buy them AGAIN. Not that this is from experience or anything.

Anyways, we've had a nice little surge of young catchers from late July through now. Gary Sanchez already blew by our minimum 70% Fleaflicker ownership cut-off. Sandy Leon and Mike Zunino have also made a great impression. Leon's hitting .383 with some pop and Zunino has made the most of yet another chance in the Majors by hitting .273 with nine homers so far in 77 at-bats. Fantasy owners have caught on with Leon, bringing up his ownership percentage up to 43%. Zunino has 9% ownership. Are both on this week's list? Well, they are in this introduction, so that also is an endorsement to grab them. There are six others though that could help you. Let's dig in.

Week 21 Waiver Wire Catchers

Yadier Molina (STL) 68% - Yadi is so close to being off this list. Perhaps if he was hypnotized into thinking he was playing the Mets all the time. Seriously... he went 3-for-5 against them on Tuesday and as of this writing, he was 1-for-1 on Wednesday. If he faced Mets pitching the entire season he'd hit like .400 every year. As a New York fan, this is extremely aggravating. He's hit safely in six of his last 10 games. If you need a catcher, grab him.

Stephen Vogt (OAK) 67% - Yes, Vogt hasn't shown as much power as usual in 2016. He only has 10 at this point and he would have to go on a Kraken-like tear to reach last season's career high of 18. That said, it wouldn't surprise me either. He's not hitting that terribly with a .266 average. What hurts is that he only has 36 RBI. The Oakland catcher has hits in four of his last 10 games, so he's been slumping a bit. Still worth a shot.

Evan Gattis (HOU) 62% - Mount Gattis might be showing signs of erupting. He's homered twice in the past 10 games and he's also had three multi-hit games in the same span. Now might be the best time to add him to your squad, because if he keeps this up, he's going to make a lot of pitchers look bad in the upcoming weeks. Be the one riding the lava down the volcano, not the one seeing it come towards you.

Yasmani Grandal (LAD) 59% - Grandal's been a one-trick pony this season but when that trick is depositing baseballs over the outfield walls, then it's pretty impressive. If he was just doing a headstand in the batter's box before each at-bat, then that would get old real fast. You probably need power and Grandal's got it. More and more people are seeing that he can be a good No. 2 catcher. Grab him before he's gone.

Matt Wieters (BAL) 58% - Yes, it's true that Wieters has not exactly impressed this season. That's always a bad thing when you're going to be a free agent. Still, he's put together a nice little run over the past 10 games, including a 5-for-5 effort. He's got mediocre power, but he could get you some points nearly every night as a No. 2 catcher.

Willson Contreras (CHC) 55% - Contreras was one of the first young catchers to come up this season and make an immediate impact. He cooled down a bit in July but has been raking over his last 10 games. The Cubs catcher has hit two homers over that span and also driven in six runs. He could make a heck of a No. 2 catcher for the rest of the season.
