Week 12 Waiver Wire: First Base (1B) and Third Base (3B)

Welcome back, RotoBallers. It's that time again, and I'm here to help you identify some waiver wire pickups at first base and third base for Week 12. Be sure to also check out our weekly waiver wire rankings that are constantly being updated for different league sized and formats.

We're bearing down on the halfway point of the fantasy baseball season. Hopefully, your teams are in position to make a run at the title. Either way, read on for this week's corner infield waiver recommendations.

Week 12 Corner Infield Waiver Wire Targets

Jose Ramirez, 3B, Cleveland Indians (45 percent owned)

Ramirez’s batting average has dipped below .300 recently, but he remains on track for the best season of his young career. Still just 23, he’s hitting .288/.355/.409 with three homers, seven steals, and 56 R+RBI. He’s eligible at both middle infield positions and in the outfield on all of the major platforms, offering valuable flexibility to owners in deeper leagues. Ramirez should continue to find regular playing time around the diamond thanks to this versatility.

Brandon Moss, 1B, St. Louis Cardinals (39 percent)

After scuffling throughout most of the month of May, Moss has been a force so far in June. While he’s only played in a dozen games, he’s hit a whopping .357/.413/.929 with seven dingers and 20 R+RBI. You usually don’t get that kind of production even from full-time players. He’ll sit against most lefties (and even if he starts against a southpaw, you should probably leave him on your bench) but Moss boasts a 1.045 OPS against RHP. He’s hit all 16 of his homers on the year in those 128 at-bats.

Joe Mauer, 1B, Minnesota Twins (21 percent)

Unlike Moss, Mauer rarely sees the bench – he’s started all but two games for the Twinkies in 2016. After a couple of lean years, Mauer’s on pace for his highest home run total since 2009; he has seven bombs already. Five of those homers have come in the last month, as he’s hit .293 with 32 R+RBI over that span. True, the veteran isn’t the most exciting option these days, but he’s outproduced sexier (and universally owned) names like Mark Trumbo, Jose Abreu, and Matt Carpenter in recent weeks.

Ryan Rua, 1B, Texas Rangers (12 percent)

Rua is a part-time player who does most of his damage against southpaws, but check out his production over the last 30 days: .357 AVG, 15 R, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 4 SB. That he’s a top 40 hitter on both Yahoo and ESPN during that time despite having significantly fewer at-bats than the players around him is pretty impressive. Given his limitations against same-sided pitching and the logjam of the Rangers roster, Rua’s mostly a deep league option – but he’s a damned good one.

Luis Valbuena, 1B/3B, Houston Astros (4 percent)

There’s no point in sugarcoating it – for the first month of the season, Valbuena was terrible. He hit just .183/.290/.250 with zero homers and only four extra-base hits. But since May 7, when he finally went yard for the first time, Valbuena’s quietly been excellent. During that six week stretch, he’s hit .291/.375/.543 with eight homers and 36 R+RBI. With both A.J. Reed and Alex Bregman gunning for promotions to the big leagues, Valbuena may eventually find playing time hard to come by. For now, though, he deserves to be on more fantasy rosters.
