Fantasy Football Buy Low & Sell High Candidates for Week 6

The waiver wire isn't the only place to change the course of your team. The right trade can make or break your season. The key is to buy low on cold players and sell overachieving players whose values have skyrocketed.

While this is a well-known method, some owners still tend to overreact to a small sample size, so it's important to take advantage of those opportunities.

Fantasy Football Buy Low Candidates

Lamar Miller (RB, HOU)

Miller is coming off his worst game of the year, against a Vikings team that has yielded the sixth fewest yards rushing per game to date. After seeing at least 20 total touches in each of Houston’s first four weeks, he ran the ball just eight times (20 yards) and caught one pass (four yards) as the Texans were playing from behind and were forced to throw the ball early and often.

The fifth-year veteran mustered 16 rushing plays of 20 or more yards over the last two years, but his longest run through five games this year is 15 yards. He also had 16 touchdowns on the ground during that time, but has yet to find the end zone in 2016. The big plays and the end-zone scampers should both be coming sooner rather than later, and fantasy owners will wanna grab him at his lowest value.

Alshon Jeffery (WR, CHI)

There is certainly a pattern in this series of articles. Jeffery has 22 catches for 394 yards, but still no touchdowns. It doesn’t matter who is under center in Chicago, that has to change. He currently sits 11th in yards and ninth in yards per catch, but has just 22 receptions on 31 targets— four in the red zone, one completion. In 2015, Jeffery was targeted inside the 20-yard line 17 times in just nine contests, hauling in seven of those passes for four scores.

The 26-year-old has been battling a knee injury, but is expected to suit up for Week 6 against the Jaguars, who have given up the ninth most points to opposing wideouts. For fantasy owners in need of an immediate boost at the wide receiver position, it is worth gambling on Jeffery’s ability to find the end zone once he develops some chemistry with Brian Hoyer.

Julian Edelman (WR, NE)

The impact Tom Brady’s absence had on Edelman’s fantasy value was entirely understated. The eighth-year slot receiver hasn’t posted double-digit fantasy points in three consecutive weeks, but in Brady’s season debut in Week 5, he did lead the team with 10 targets, even though me managed just five catches for 35 yards. Those targets should translate into bigger numbers as Edelman and Brady regain the chemistry that has made the Patriots’ No. 1 receiver such a coveted fantasy piece over the last few years. It won’t be long until Edelman rejoins the WR1 conversation.

 

Fantasy Football Sell High Candidates

Philip Rivers (QB, SD)

Rivers has thrived over the Chargers’ first five games, totaling 1,469 yards passing, 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. He owns a 108.4 passer rating to date, the fourth highest in the league among qualifiers. However, his last four opponents all fall in the bottom half in opponents’ passer rating— Jaguars (19th), Colts (30th), Saints (28th) and Raiders (29th). With two games against Denver on the upcoming schedule, Rivers isn’t the most appealing option over the next few weeks. Plus, not having Keenan Allen and Danny Woodhead should catch up with the 34-year-old quarterback, and long-time safety net Antonio Gates appears a shell of his former self. Capitalize on his recent thrashing of the Saints and try to upgrade at one of the flex spots.

Terrance West (RB, BAL)

The Ravens, led by now-former offensive coordinator Marc Trestman, abandoned the run in their Week 5 loss to the Redskins despite West’s 8.6 yards per carry. He finished with 11 carries for 95 yards, giving him 208 yards rushing over his last two games. The 25-year-old has bounced around quite a bit during his first three years in the NFL, playing for three different teams but failing to find any sustained success.

Kenneth Dixon wasn’t much of a factor in Week 5, with just four total touches for five yards, but should begin to seize control of Baltimore’s starting running back job. Additionally, the Ravens are set to embark on a trip to the Tri-state area for matchups with the Giants (3.5 yards per carry) and Jets (3.3 yards per carry) in the coming weeks. West’s value could soon diminish, so it would be wise to ship him off before that happens.

Jeremy Kerley (WR, SF)

Kerley recorded his first 100-yard game since 2012 in Week 5 against the Cardinals, giving him 304 yards on 26 catches with two touchdowns so far this season. He leads the 49ers by a wide margin in targets, receptions and yards, but that could soon change.

It was announced earlier in the week that Colin Kaepernick will be starting at quarterback for the 49ers in Week 6. Blaine Gabbert currently sits dead last in yards per attempt (5.93), while Kaepernick has a career 7.37 yards per attempt average. During his time as a starter, Kaepernick often neglected his slot receiver in favor of throwing deep— in 2013, slot receiver Stevie Johnson had just 50 targets to Anquan Boldin’s 130 and Michael Crabtree’s 108. Kerley, San Francisco’s current slot receiver, could see his usage decrease going forward. Dangle him around the league while his fantasy value still exists.
