L.J. Phillips Sustains High-Ankle Sprain
Iowa running back L.J. Phillips (ankle) has a high ankle sprain that he's dealing with. He sustained the injury in Week 1 during the Hawkeyes' 40-0 win over Northern Illinois. Phillips had four carries in that one before getting injured; he gained just five yards and had a long rush of three yards. In 2025, he gained 1,920 rushing yards and scored 19 times across 295 carries for South Dakota; he also caught 28 passes for 195 yards and another touchdown. Phillips is the top backup to Kamari Moulton, who should be a workhorse in Week 2 if Phillips cannot go against Iowa State. At this point, Phillips is not expected to play, so Moulton will power the backfield, with Nathan McNeil and Xavier Williams as backup options. McNeil and Williams each rushed for eight yards in the opening game, with McNeil getting seven carries and Williams logging six attempts. Williams caught two passes for 12 yards and a score. Moulton had 183 rushing yards and two scores over 11 carries.
