Matt's tight end (TE) fantasy football start 'em, sit 'em picks for Week 10 of 2024. His TE lineups advice for Week 10 fantasy football start/sit decisions.

There were a couple of prolific tight ends last week, as Mike Gesicki had a pair of touchdowns, 100 yards receiving, and 27 fantasy points. Taysom Hill, Theo Johnson, Ja'Tavion Sanders, Nick Vannett, and Drew Sample also recorded double-digit fantasy production in Week 9. Even Chris Manhertz and Quintin Morris ended up with touchdown grabs.

We all knew the tight end position would be scary again, but Vannett and Manhertz, come on, that just isn’t right. Who’s next, Luke Farrell?

Some significant options are off the table this week as four teams have their bye weeks in Week 10. Fantasy managers will be without Brock Bowers, David Njoku, Tucker Kraft, and Noah Fant.

Week 10 Starts - Fantasy Football Booms

Mark Andrews - TE, Baltimore Ravens vs Cincinnati Bengals 

I get it if you still have trust issues; the tight-end position will do that to you. After pulling us all back in with three consecutive fantasy performances in which Mark Andrews recorded 14 or more fantasy points, Week 9’s 4.6-point production was a huge letdown.

The talk in fantasy is how much Mark Andrews had let managers down. Failing to register more than 10 fantasy points in each of the first five weeks, here we are, entering Week 10, and Andrews is the TE11 in fantasy with 76.9 PPR fantasy points, averaging 8.5 per contest.

Look for Andrews to rebound nicely this week against a Bengals team that has allowed a league-worst 22.40 fantasy points per game over the last four weeks. Over those four weeks, Cincinnati has yielded 344 receiving yards (second-most) and four touchdowns (tied-most).

Andrews should be able to produce a similar stat line to that of Brock Bowers last week. Bowers caught five of eight targets for 45 yards and a touchdown.

T.J. Hockenson - TE, Minnesota Vikings at Jacksonville Jaguars

It was great to see T.J. Hockenson receive a 45% snap share in his return to action last week. Expect that to ramp up this week closer to the 70% we are accustomed to seeing from the Pro Bowl tight end. In his return, Hockenson caught three of four targets for 27 yards.

TJ Hockenson, according to PFF data, had a 63% route participation rate on Sunday night. He was typically well above the 80% mark last year. (This is me saying that we should expect him to get more run moving forward.)

In Week 10, Hockenson and the Vikings face a Jaguars defense that has allowed five touchdowns this season to tight ends and over 13 fantasy points per game. That number has jumped to 20.22 fantasy points (fourth-most) over the last four weeks, as all four touchdowns have occurred over this timeframe.

Since 2022, only Evan Engram and Travis Kelce have produced more 10-catch performances than Hockenson (three). I’m not saying he hauls in 10 passes in only his second game post-ACL injury, but I’m not, not saying it either.

Jonnu Smith - TE, Miami Dolphins at Los Angeles Rams

Every week, there is at least one tight end whose fantasy production is a complete surprise. This week, that tight end is Jonnu Smith. This summer, Smith criticized the wings in Buffalo, saying, “The buffalo wings ain’t even good,” then went out and caught five passes for 46 yards. By fantasy tight-end standards, that’s a solid day.

On the season, Smith has averaged 8.3 fantasy points per game and has produced nine or more fantasy points in three of his last four contests, including a 22.6-point performance in Week 7 against the Colts, where he finished with a touchdown and 97 receiving yards.

The Dolphins pass catcher has a good matchup this week against the Rams. Los Angeles has allowed four touchdowns and 474 yards receiving this season to opposing tight ends, which has led to the sixth-most fantasy points against (14.6). Three of those four touchdowns have occurred over the last four weeks, and the fantasy points allowed number has jumped to 20.33 per game.

Week 10 Sits - Fantasy Football Busts

Dalton Schultz - TE,  Houston Texans vs. Detroit Lions

Over the last four weeks, no team allowed fewer fantasy points to the tight end position than the 5.70 that the Detroit Lions gave up. Over the previous four weeks, the Lions have allowed just 12 receptions for 71 yards and haven’t allowed a tight end to hit paydirt. Even throughout the season, the Lions yielded just a single touchdown to the position and the second-fewest fantasy points per game (7.15).

With no Nico Collins or Stefon Diggs last week, Dalton Schultz was in a prime position to help fantasy managers. Unfortunately, the Texans pass-catcher hauled in just three of his six targets against the Jets for a lowly 21 yards.

That was supposed to be the breakout game for Schultz and any fantasy aspirations he may have had. Entering this week's contest, he sits as the TE25 in fantasy, averaging just 5.6 fantasy points per contest. It’s hard to trust Schultz on a regular day, even more so in a difficult matchup like this week's. The return of Collins this week means any targets that may have been available are already long gone.

Jake Ferguson - TE, Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Dak Prescott's absence will be a severe problem for fantasy managers. Not only did Prescott feel something in his hamstring he’s never felt before, but CeeDee Lamb also had an MRI on his shoulder for a potential AC joint sprain.

Philadelphia is a problematic matchup when everything works in your favor, not when the cards are stacked against you. The Eagles have allowed 7.98 fantasy points this season to the tight end position, ranking them as a top-5 fantasy defense against the position. In eight games, the Eagles have yet to surrender a touchdown to the position.

Ferguson had a solid start last week, and he finished with 14 fantasy points thanks to his seven grabs for 71 yards. On the flip side, Philadelphia limited Engram to just five catches for 45 yards. Managers should expect a fantasy outing for Ferguson like Engram's last week.

Evan Engram - TE, Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Minnesota Vikings

Speaking of Engram, you have to sit him again this week. With Christian Kirk out for the season, Travis Etienne limited, Gabe Davis injured, and Brian Thomas Jr. at less than 100%, you would have expected Engram to have a bigger day than his 11.5 fantasy points indicated.

For the most part, Engram has been consistent when healthy. Over the last four weeks, Engram has averaged 12.95 fantasy points per game and has produced double-digit fantasy production in three of the last four. The problem is that over the last four, his opponent, the Minnesota Vikings, hasn’t allowed a touchdown and is allowing just 7.17 fantasy points per game against tight ends (third-fewest).

It’s hard to sit Engram, but I may look at some lesser tight ends, such as Theo Johnson, Will Dissly, and Tyler Conklin, who have favorable matchups. Even Ja'Tavion Sanders is an interesting option. Sanders is the TE16 in yards per route run (1.41), which is right there with David Njoku and Ferguson. However, over the last month, the rookie's yards per route run rate is an astonishing 2.46.
