Alec Bohm and Kris Bryant Fantasy Baseball Updates - Ben Rosener’s MLB Beat

Alec Bohm fantasy baseball rankings draft sleepers MLB injury news

Ben Rosener looks at the fantasy baseball impact of Philadelphia Phillies infielder Alec Bohm and Colorado Rockies outfielder Kris Bryant each being placed on the 10-day injured list.

Major League Baseball’s regular season is here, and with it comes the daily influx of baseball news that fantasy managers missed in the winter months. Lineup news, actual games happening, constant waiver wire moves, pitching assignments, and bullpen usage.

This column aims to cover any and all fantasy baseball news, big or small, and how it pertains to your fantasy team. Spring training or the regular season, it's covered here.

Has a player who's usually been hitting in the middle of a lineup suddenly batting eighth or ninth for an extended period? The fantasy implications will be covered here. The same goes for injuries and injured placements and whether or not you should consider picking up a player who was recently called up. Basically, any kernel of fantasy news and its relevance to fantasy managers could be covered here. Today, the news of the day is the fantasy impact of Philadelphia Phillies infielder Alec Bohm and Colorado Rockies outfielder Kris Bryant each being placed on the 10-day injured list.

Fantasy Baseball Impact Of Alec Bohm Being Placed On The 10-Day Injured List

Philadelphia Phillies infielder Alec Bohm has been placed on the 10-day injured list per a tweet from the team’s official Twitter account on Thursday morning. Per the Phillies' tweet, the injured list placement is due to a left hamstring strain.

The 26-year-old, who has split his time between first base and third base this year, is batting .265 with a .321 on-base percentage, six home runs, and a pair of stolen bases in 215 plate appearances. As for who replaces him in the lineup fantasy-wise, that remains to be seen, though the Phillies certainly aren’t lacking for options.

Drew Ellis, who per the tweet from the Phillies announcing the move, had his contract selected to take Bohm’s place on the active roster, is certainly a candidate to step into a larger role. Ellis hit .279 with a .354 on-base percentage, five home runs, and a stolen base in his last 48 plate appearances at Triple-A after a strong stint at Double-A to start the year. And while he’s never played first base before, the 27-year-old does have experience at third base.

Kody Clemens, who has seen the most time at first base of any Phillies player besides Bohm this season, is another candidate to potentially see expanded playing time. Clemens, acquired from the Detroit Tigers in an offseason trade along with relief pitcher Gregory Soto, is batting .268 with a .333 on-base percentage and four home runs in 78 plate appearances, though he’s also striking out 28.2% of the time.

Considering Bohm’s ability to play both corner infield spots, Edmundo Sosa could also see extra plate appearances with Bohm on the injured list. Sosa has the most innings of any Philadelphia player at third base this year, though he’s hitting .261 with a .282 on-base percentage, four home runs, and a stolen base in 236 plate appearances.

All told, while Bohm has been a solid fantasy contributor this season, fantasy managers outside of deeper leagues are probably best off looking elsewhere for streaming or short-term replacements for the infielder than going with some of the Phillies’ in-house options.

Fantasy Baseball Impact Of Kris Bryant Being Placed On The 10-Day Injured List

Per a tweet from the Colorado Rockies’ Public Relations Twitter account, the team has placed outfielder Kris Bryant on the 10-day injured list due to a left heel bruise. Per the tweet, the move was made retroactive to May 31.

Bryant was logging a .263 average and a .346 on-base percentage in 214 plate appearances prior to being placed on the injured list, adding five home runs and a .111 ISO in the process. With Bryant going on the injured list, Brenton Doyle figures to continue to get an extended look in the outfield alongside the likes of Jurickson Profar and Randal Grichuk.

Doyle is batting just .233 this season, with a .275 on-base percentage in 91 plate appearances. That being said, he’s also added four home runs and seven stolen bases so far, providing solid fantasy value in both categories. Moving forward, he’s likely only an option for fantasy managers in deeper leagues considering his lower batting average and on-base numbers so far. However, he should continue to chip in with both home runs and stolen bases.

While we’re still dealing with a small sample size with Doyle, who also has posted just a .287 xwOBA so far. But he’s also sporting a 15.1% barrel rate and ranks in the 99th percentile in Statcast’s sprint speed metric. Considering the power and speed potential here – not to mention the fact that he’ll play half of his games at Coors Field – Doyle makes for a useful fantasy option moving forward in leagues with 14 or more teams.

So far, the rookie former fourth-round pick has collected three home runs to go along with a .773 OPS in 44 plate appearances at home this season.
