Fantasy Basketball Risers: Week 10

Jrue Holiday - G, Boston Celtics

The old Jrue Holiday is back, and the Celtics are looking scary. The two-time All-Star joined the Celtics in the aftermath of the Damian Lillard trade, but he didn't have the best start to his tenure with the 17-time NBA champions. He averaged just 12.3 points and 4.5 assists a night while shooting 44.4% from the field and 38.3% from three. The last time Holiday averaged under 15 PPG was during the 2014-15 season, and the last time he averaged less than 13 PPG was during his rookie campaign.

Fortunately for Celtics fans though, Holiday looks like he has finally figured out how to play with this group of players. Last week, he put up 19.7 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists a night while having the best true shooting percentage among all NBA players who attempted 30+ field goals last week (80.3%). When Holiday plays like this, the Celtics become unstoppable.

Cameron Johnson - F, Brooklyn Nets

Cameron Johnson has always been a lethal shooter. He shot 45.7% from deep in his last season at UNC before becoming a lottery pick in the 2019 NBA draft. He shot 39.3% from three in his first four seasons in the league, but he did struggle just a little bit from deep to start this season, which caused his PPG to decline from 15.5 last season to 13.9 before last week.

Last week, Johnson seemingly remembered who he was and exploded, averaging 19.8 points while shooting 63% from the field and 56.5% from three. Johnson still doesn't provide fantasy managers with much else other than his scoring, so we should be happy that his shots are falling once again.

Taurean Prince - F, Los Angeles Lakers

The Timberwolves are flying high right now, but they probably wish they still had Taurean Prince on their roster. Prince was a bit inconsistent in his first 18 games as a Laker, as he only shot 40.8% from the field and 32.5% from three, but he has been amazing in December. The Lakers had a very turbulent month, as they won the In-Season Tournament, but they've also struggled mightily since their triumph.

The team has gone 2-6 since then, but despite all of that, Prince was excellent. He averaged 12.8 points on 49.5% shooting from the field and 46.3% shooting from deep. Prince will also benefit from D'Angelo Russell's benching, which leaves him as the best shooter in the Lakers' starting five.

Fantasy Basketball Fallers: Week 10

Reggie Jackson - G, Denver Nuggets

Reggie Jackson had a nice run when Jamal Murray was hurt, but since then, he has reverted to what he was last season. Jackson is always a threat to go off whenever Murray is out, but unfortunately, it seems like his days of being a consistent fantasy contributor are over. The veteran only averaged 4.8 points on putrid shooting splits, as he only shot 25.8% from the field and went 0-11 from three-point range.

What's concerning is the lack of minutes he's been getting recently. He only averaged 15.4 minutes last week, which is 10.4 MPG less than his average minutes per game over his first 28 games (25.8). And the worst thing is, if he keeps playing inefficiently like this, his minutes will get lower and lower just like last year.

Bennedict Mathurin - G/F, Indiana Pacers

Usually, we expect young players to try and shake off their inconsistencies in their sophomore year, but Bennedict Mathurin is still very inconsistent. You never know what you're going to get with the former sixth-overall pick. One week, he'll drop 34 points on 60% shooting against a contending Clippers team. And then the next week, he will average six points on 29.2% shooting from the floor and 2-11 shooting from deep.

Mathurin is an exciting player so NBA fans are hoping that he can be more consistent in the coming years, but for now, he's too streaky to be a valuable fantasy contributor. Especially when you consider that he doesn't give you much else apart from his scoring.

Jalen Green - G, Houston Rockets

We end this list with yet another young and inconsistent scorer who gives you nothing but scoring, Jalen Green. Green was supposed to be the go-to guy for this young Rockets team, but now he's playing second fiddle to Alperen Sengun in the Rockets' offense. Green had 16 games with 20+ points in his first 28 games of the 2022-23 season (over 57% of his games) but that number has declined to just 11 games this season (39% of his games).

He is just averaging 11.6 points a night while shooting 30.5% from the field and 26.7% from three over his last nine contests, but the Rockets have gone 5-4 in that stretch due to their great defense. Green has been benched in the fourth quarter for two games in a row now and there's a chance that we could see him come off the bench in the near future.
