Wil Myers 2020 Outlook: Playing Time Is Not The Only Thing Decreasing
5 years agoWil Myers used to be a lock for 20 plus home runs and 20 plus stolen bases year in and year out. That has changed the last two seasons. In 2019 Myers only hit 18 home runs and stole 16 bases, which are still nice, but not what fantasy drafters are hoping for when drafting Myers. The decrease in home runs and steals was not the only thing that was down for Myers in 2019. He saw his strikeout rate jump to a career-worst 34.3%, up from 27.4% in 2018. The increase in K rate can be attributed in part to a 5.5% decrease in zone contact rate and a 7.5% increase in whiff rate. But wait, there is more. Myers batting average dropped to a career-low .239, and his wRC+ dropped to a below-average 96. Not a great 2019 for Myers. Looking ahead to 2020, it does not get much better. The Padres have a lot of outfield options going into the season, and it appears Myers will be platooning or even possibly traded. If Myers had every day playing time, there would be an argument to invest in him as the 75th outfielder off the board around pick 285, but his current situation makes him too risky going into draft season.
