Ken Giles Looks To Shake Off Shaky Postseason
7 years agoHouston Astros incumbent closer Ken Giles heads into the season with some gaudy 2017 numbers but faces questions after a disastrous postseason. The Astros won the World Series but Giles was nowhere to be seen by the end of it. He posted an ugly 11.74 ERA in 7 2/3 innings, losing the faith of manager A.J. Hinch and losing his job as closer. Giles had enjoyed a fantastic regular season, converting 34-of-38 saves with a 2.30 ERA while striking out 83 in 62 2/3 innings pitched. It will be interesting to see how Giles responds to his tough run in the playoffs and fantasy owners need to beware of a shorter leash than usual to begin the season. The Astros have relievers Chris Devenski and Brad Peacock in the wings that could also close so the pressure will be on Giles early to silence the doubters. Giles is not in the top-5 among fantasy closers but certainly could right the ship and breeze past 30 saves pitching for a team that will contend again in 2018 if he can put the past behind him.
