Bryce Harper 2021 Fantasy Outlook: A Safe Early Round Investment
4 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper's detractors seem to point to him never hitting 50 homers in a season as a failure and a reason not to draft him in fantasy. That’s almost as stupid as passing on him in the late second round, which is where he is currently going in drafts. Harper put up a .268/.420/.542 slash line in 2020 with 13 homers and eight steals in 58 games, which on a per-game basis was very similar to his first year for the Phillies in 2019 (35 homers, 15 steals and a .260/.372/.510 slash line). Consistency is an undervalued tool, and any concerns about Harper being susceptible to injury because of his playing style should be allayed with just 10 missed games in his last three seasons. Harper's run production may be dependent on the hitters around Harper, but he cannot do more himself. In 2020, Harper ranked in the 93rd percentile for exit velocity, 92nd percentile for hard-hit rate and the 97th percentile for barrel rate. In leagues that count walks and on-base percentage, Harper elevates to a first-round pick, as his 20.1% walk rate was second best last year. It was the third straight year in which he ranked in the top 10 for walk rate. Even in standard leagues, Harper’s consistency matches his production, and he is a perfect second-round pick (ADP 20) to build your roster around.
