Michigan Escapes Shocking Upset on Hail Mary
The Michigan Wolverines controversially escaped a shocking start to their season on Saturday night against Western Michigan. Down 12-7 with 35 seconds left on the game clock, Michigan needed a touchdown to win. Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood, who had struggled all game, completed a 28-yard pass to wide receiver JJ Buchanan and spiked the ball with 9 seconds left. Michigan then ran a Hail Mary, and Underwood threw the ball out of bounds with the clock reading all zeros. However, upon further review, the referees deemed that there was one second left on the clock, giving Underwood and the Wolverines one more shot. Underwood heaved a ball towards the middle end of the zone, and Buchanan came down with it in the end zone, ball game. Up until the last drive, Underwood struggled to be effective, totaling 95 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception while rushing nine times for 47 yards and one touchdown. Underwood continued to struggle with accuracy, completing only 54% of his pass attempts, and he'll face a tougher battle next week against Oklahoma.
