Desmond Ridder 2023 NFL Player Outlook: Couldn’t Have a Better Opportunity With Strong Supporting Cast
2 years agoAtlanta Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder was an underwhelming prospect when the team drafted him in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, his four starts at the end of the 2022 season didn't change many people's opinions of the former Cincinnati Bearcat. Over these four weeks, he averaged 177 passing yards, 0.5 passing TDs (both came in Week 18), and 16 rushing yards per game. Despite this wildly mediocre 9.25 fantasy points per game, he has yet to throw an NFL interception. There is also reason for optimism when you look at his supporting cast. This team has three skill-position players drafted with the 8th overall pick or better. Kyle Pitts (No. 4 in 2021), Drake London (No. 8 in 2022), and Bijan Robinson (No. 8 in 2023) are an incredible support system. Plus, this team has a decent offensive line and a committed run game. The team did sign accomplished veteran Taylor Hienicke to a two-year, $14 million deal this offseason, which is interesting in case Ridder fails to meet expectations. Regardless of what you may think of his ability, the coaches have committed to him being the starter in Week 1. With the players around him, he is absolutely worth a late-round dart throw in Two-QB or superflex leagues. Ridder may not be worth a roster spot in single QB leagues, but keep an eye out if he produces early in the season.
