Phillip Lindsay 2019 Player Outlook: Competition At Position Makes For Boom/Bust Running Back Option
5 years agoLindsay was one of 2018’s biggest surprises, finishing at RB12 even with a missed game . The 5’8, 175 pound back out of Colorado lead the Broncos with 1,037 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. He was a menace in the passing game (35 catches, 241 yards, 1 TD) as well, and that’s where most of his upside comes. He only touched the ball 20+ times twice last year, so it’s hard to expect him to be a bell cow back at his size. Royce Freeman is still in the mix and will get an unknown split. The Broncos have also added Theo Riddick, who is a RB/WR that is going to take at least a couple of catches away from Lindsay. If Lindsay comes down with a minor injury and Freeman is serviceable, we could easily see the Broncos preserve Lindsay and his smaller frame . At his less than ideal workload, every touch is important and it’s hard to see Lindsay returning the same per-touch results as he did in 2018. That’s not to say he doesn’t have upside, as he could certainly work himself into a lead role and pick up 250 touches. If he falls to you at the end of the fifth round, I’d take him over Ingram or Michel, but don't reach into the fourth. He’s certainly a boom/bust pick, and running backs start thinning out in the 4th/5th round.
