D'Angelo Russell 2019 Player Outlook
5 years agoNew Golden State Warriors guard D’Angelo Russell enters the 2019-20 season with one of the more unique draft ranges for an early-round player. After a breakout second season in Brooklyn that saw him become an All-Star for the first time, Russell joins his third NBA franchise by age 23 – but this is no ordinary change of scenery. With Klay Thompson set to be sidelined for the majority of the regular season, Russell will likely assume the No. 2 scoring role alongside Stephen Curry. Despite the change of scenery, there’s reason for optimism surrounding Russell, who shot a career-best 41.2 percent on jump shots last season. If there is one thing Russell is certain to see in bunches upon joining the Warriors is more shots. He averaged 7.8 three-point attempts per game for the Nets in ’18-19, knocking down 36.9 percent from deep. After dishing out 7.0 assists per game last year, replicating that number is a bit more in question, although should Russell be deployed at the point with Curry on the bench, there exists the possibility of significant contributions across the board. Owners will have to find a way to balance the projection of the Warriors’ high-octane offense against the reality that Russell is no longer a No. 1 offensive option on his squad. Either way, he presents a tantalizing fantasy option for owners who enjoy taking high ceiling risks.
