Nick Mariano's 2022 PPR Sleepers List for Fantasy Football Drafts (Premium Content)

All other Premium Tools can be accessed on the premium dashboard.

The term "Sleeper" is thrown around more haphazardly than a Mitchell Trubisky out route, but there's no doubting its place in our fantasy lexicon. I do think that everyone that uses it then needs to define what it means within the context of the article. In my mind, we need to head outside of the top-36 RB & WR, as well as top-10 TE. That's not helpful to me. No one is gaining much of an edge inside of that.

For me, the term sleeper just means a mid-to-late round pick who could be an excellent value where they are currently being drafted. In this article, I will highlight two or three of my favorite sleepers at each of the three traditional positions. Those of you seeking kicker or defense sleepers, feel free to try me on Twitter but really you just need to take a deep breath and worry about these positions on draft day. I'd advocate you avoid drafting K or DEF and use the extra bench slots on late-round fliers, anyway. All ADP data used for this article is from FantasyPros aggregate ADP data for PPR drafts and was updated on 08/03/2022.

Editor's Note: Our incredible team of writers received five total writing awards and 13 award nominations by the Fantasy Sports Writers Association, tops in the industry! Congrats to all the award winners and nominees including Best NFL Series, MLB Series, NBA Writer, PGA Writer and Player Notes writer of the year. 2022 Running Back PPR Draft Sleepers

Rhamondre Stevenson (NE), RB38

Stevenson and Damien Harris combined to spearhead a top-10 rushing attack for New England in 2021. While it was Harris who led the way with 202 carries, 929 yards, and 15 (!) touchdowns against Stevenson’s 133-606-5 rushing line, the rookie’s explosiveness was undeniable.

He also played in three fewer games compared to Harris, posting 50.5 yards per game to Harris’ 62 YPG. Stevenson’s receiving chops helped eased the loss of James White and his 5.0 yards per touch barely edged Harris’ 4.8 mark.

And remember that Stevenson needed to earn his playing time after a Week 1 fumble. He was inactive in four of six games between Weeks 2-7 and finally eased in double-digit touches by Week 9. From then on, Stevenson was the RB26 in PPR formats while Harris rode the gaudy touchdown tally to an RB19 finish.

But Harris never surpassed a 50% snap rate again from Week 9 on while Stevenson did so thrice, out-touching Harris 117 to 92 in that span while making many defenders miss.

I’d expect Bill Belichick and company to lean on Harris and Stevenson as a thunder-and-lightning combo in 2022 but a healthy James White doesn’t mean Stevenson can’t continue to grow as a receiver. He namedropped working at route-running and being a third-down back this offseason and could pay PPR dividends in 2022.

James Cook (BUF), RB40

Cook is being drafted outside of the traditional “flex” range (the top 36 for 12-team formats) so I’m okay squeezing him in at the top. The Bills are a premier rushing offense and added to the firepower with the 63rd pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by selection Cook. He joins Josh Allen, Devin Singletary, Zack Moss, and Duke Johnson as Buffalo’s rushers. What highlights Cook beyond his own abilities is a name you don’t see there.

The Bills nearly signed J.D. McKissic this offseason, but the deal collapsed and he wound up re-signing with Washington instead. Over his four seasons at Georgia, Cook caught 67 balls for 730 yards and six scores.

He did so all while averaging over six yards per carry in each of those four campaigns, of course. He’s a strong runner for his frame but the passing versatility is paramount here. Not only for his role in PPR leagues but how he’s likely deployed by Buffalo.

Singletary is a fine all-around guy but doesn’t excel as a receiver. Moss failed to make an impression at all. Johnson is likely veteran depth to potentially push Moss. Allen is Mike Alstott and the undisputed RB1 for Buffalo, but Cook can open up the line of scrimmage and take some upfront pressure out of Allen’s face.

He should be a flex play in PPR even with a side role that garners 50 targets over the season, but if Singletary fades then we could creep into RB2 territory.

2022 Wide Receiver PPR Draft Sleepers

Rondale Moore (ARI), WR63

Moore has a chance to establish momentum out of the gate with DeAndre Hopkins’ six-game suspension. He’ll operate out of the slot for Kyler Murray with Marquise Brown and A.J. Green on the perimeter.

By the time Hopkins is back in Week 7, we’ll know whether Moore has played well enough to earn the full-time slot role. It would be Green who likely slides to the bench given his skill set that plays on the outside.

The 2021 season saw Moore produce 182 yards and a touchdown in Weeks 1-2 before falling behind Christian Kirk. Of course, Kirk went off for nearly 1,000 yards to earn an $84-million contract from Jacksonville this offseason.

Moore has shown the upside and caught 84.4% of his targets in ‘21 before an ankle injury ended his rookie season. There’s an avenue to 80 catches here and that’s PPR gold outside of the top-60 WRs.

Lean into last season's hilariously low 1.49 average depth of target for layup PPR points, assuming they keep that attitude of attacking near the line of scrimmage with his agility. The next-lowest aDOT compared to his 1.49 was Braxton Berrios at 5.11 (min. 30 targets) so really, it was quite absurd.

I understand he's 5'7" but he hasn't shrunk since Arizona drafted him in the second round last year. This draft slot makes it worth seeing what the plan holds for Rondale in a fast-moving offense.

Nico Collins (HOU), WR81

Collins, who appeared on the above list just now, has a chance to emerge next to Brandin Cooks on a Houston team that should face many negative gamescripts in 2022.  The Texans drafted John Metchie III but he's likely out for the 2022 season after being diagnosed with leukemia. Cancer sucks.

Davis Mills was starting to get some momentum but then missed Weeks 9-11. The Texans were blown out in Week 12 but their final five weeks hinted at potential moving forward.

Weeks 14-18 saw Mills be the QB10 in traditional fantasy formats, completing 68.7% of passes for 1,258 yards and nine touchdowns against just two interceptions. Brandin Cooks was a borderline WR1 while Collins caught 15 balls for 218 yards and a touchdown.

That’s not much, but it came on 30 targets. He was one of 37 receivers in that span to see at least 30 looks. You need an opportunity to forge good luck and Collins should have that to open 2022 despite being around the 80th WR off of the board.

2022 Tight End PPR Draft Sleepers

Cole Kmet (CHI), TE13

Kmet’s 47 targets between Weeks 12-18 were tied with George Kittle for the fifth-most among tight ends to wrap up 2021. His 316 yards in that stretch were seventh but he had zero touchdowns all year long, which torpedoed his value. Some can point to regression in that department but it is a fair criticism to say the Bears simply weren’t good in the red zone.

But expecting mild growth for Justin Fields in his second year isn’t unreasonable, especially with new head coach Matt Eberflus breathing new life into the organization.

David Montgomery heads the ground game while Darnell Mooney, Byron Pringle, and Velus Jones Jr. form an unimposing WR trio. Kmet should stand out as an impact player with no stars demanding a lion’s, err, bear’s share.

In the end, you want to seek out volume in any PPR format. Simple terms: Get top-10 passing volume at a price point outside of the top-10.

Whether you like it or not, subconscious behavioral tendencies will penalize the players such as Kmet for their underwhelming 2021 seasons. The lack of TDs in '21 mix with little reason to see his target share dwindle in '22 for a path towards top-6 play at the position.

The truth is that tight end hits a plateau after the top couple of tiers and you should aim for the players with elite 90th-percentile outcomes. If Kmet flops because the Bears remain a poor team then you can likely tag in a Brevin Jordan or Austin Hooper. Aim high late in drafts and accept the thinner margins for big returns.

David Njoku (CLE), TE17

Njoku signed a four-year contract worth $56.75 million in a signal that Cleveland wants to integrate him more into the offense in his sixth NFL season. Very few tight ends are capable of the Week 5 performance where Njoku turned seven catches into 149 yards and a touchdown. Of course, he’d never exceed four catches or 40 yards again for maximum frustration!

But now we have a commitment from Cleveland's end to Njoku, so bear with me as we ignore volume and focus on rate stats. Of the 25 tight ends with at least 50 targets last year, Njoku's 8.15 air-yards-per-target was ninth-highest.

Grading him strictly on the low volume of last year where the team had a hurt quarterback is not the way to move forward.

Once again, upside is what you’re after in late rounds, with potential league-winners sitting on the end of your bench. We can gripe about the 2022 Browns with Deshaun Watson and/or Jacoby Brissett but even Brissett would be a step above an injured Baker Mayfield gutting it out with one shoulder.

At this point, my assumption is Watson is out for 2022 and Njoku is still a strong TE to target.
