Mike Moustakas 2019 Outlook: His 38 HR in 2017 Was An Outlier
6 years agoMike Moustakas will play in 2019 in the same uniform that he finished the 2018 season. It may be worth remembering that a change of scenery did little for the left-handed slugger in 2018. Despite moving from spacious Kaufmann Stadium with Kansas City's feeble lineup to hitter haven Miller Park and Milwaukee's stacked crew of hitters, Moustakas saw no real bump from his July trade. He batted .249 as a Royal and .256 as a Brewer, and after hitting 20 home runs in 98 games with Kansas City, he only notched eight dingers in 54 games for Milwaukee. At least Milwaukee's infamous glut of trades for infielders last summer, which limited Moustakas' at-bats with the Brew Crew, will not be an issues in 2019. Actually, the Brewers cleaned house and now Moustakas has an opportunity to start the season at the keystone. Moustakas’ ADP of 150 seems built in part on the hope that he can duplicate his 38 HR campaign from 2017. Even that year, the ball didn’t really shoot off his bat, with an average exit velocity of 87.3 mph that ranked 173rd out of 334 players with 150+ batted ball events. In 2018 that number went up, but only to 89.3 mph. You will hopefully have drafted one of the several better options at 3B by pick 150, and can look elsewhere in that part of the draft. However, with second base eligibility, he might have tremendous value at that pick.
