Tevin Coleman 2019 Outlook - The New Man in Town
5 years agoAfter a season in which he looked to show himself off for free agency, but left a lot to be desired, Tevin Coleman took what amounts to a two-year prove it deal to join former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco.
If Coleman can get back to the player he was only a few years ago while sharing a backfield with Devonta Freeman than this will be a fruitful partnership once again for the duo of Coleman and Shanahan. The fact he seemingly performs better in a committee bodes well for him this season as he will be the lead back in a committee looking more and more likely to be just, he and Matt Breda. Jerick McKinnon has not returned the way the 49ers hoped he would, and Raheem Mostert is already dealing with a fractured arm suffered this preseason.
With 800 yards and four touchdowns on only 167 carries in 2018 behind a banged-up offensive line in Atlanta, the talent showed in his 4.8 yards per carry average. Add to this his receiving ability in which he had an additional 276 yards and five touchdowns on 32 receptions and his ability to be a three-down back is clear.
The best value of the two healthy 49ers backs is Breida as he is currently going the latest in drafts. As for upside, that belongs to Coleman. He has the clear history with Shanahan from the Falcons, and he was brought to San Francisco to fill what Kyle Shanahan called last season, the Tevin Coleman role. So, who better to fill this role than the actual player?
Currently, he is a starting running back going in the fifth round of fantasy drafts. This is a small price to pay for him. Earlier in the off-season, we did not know which one of the backs in San Francisco would separate themselves. Through injury attrition, it has panned out that Tevin Coleman is clearly the one to own here.
While Matt Breda will get his fair share, all teams employ some form of backfield duo in today’s NFL. Don’t let this scare you off from taking Coleman in your drafts as your running back two or even better three after getting two studs earlier.
