Nate Lowe 2020 Outlook: Former Prospect Searching For Playing Time
5 years agoAfter breezing through the Tampa Bay Rays minor league system in 2018, Nate Lowe produced well enough in Triple-A to earn himself a promotion to the majors late last season. The left-handed swinger clubbed 16 long balls in 93 games for the Durham Bulls while slashing a crisp .289/.421/.508 line thanks to some remarkable plate discipline metrics. Lowe followed his respectable 20.2% K-rate with a 17.7% walk rate that any major-leaguer would wear with pride after finishing his Double-A tenure with more free passes than strikeouts. While he certainly shined in this area in the minors, his 29.6% K% and 7.7% BB% in the bigs last year was less than ideal. Still, Lowe held his own with a .263 BA and seven homers in 169 plate appearances with the Rays, but his next opportunity to prove himself remains a mystery. With several offseason additions, the 24-year-old finds himself third on the team’s depth chart at first base with no inside track of catapulting to the top. Lowe is likely destined for Durham to begin the season, and it will take an injury or two for him to receive everyday playing time in the majors. These hurdles give him little value in redraft leagues even at his 412 ADP, but his dynasty value remains intact, we’ll just have to wait another year for his breakout.
