Willie Calhoun 2019 Outlook: Post Hype Sleeper In The Best Hitter's Park
6 years agoWillie Calhoun has so far failed to live up to his prospect hype, but the rebuilding Rangers offer the perfect opportunity and park to allow it all to come together. Being in the American League is critical for Calhoun, as, by all accounts, the glove is never going to play for more than a game or two a week. This means he is a DH long term, and for fantasy purposes, at least, an outfielder with utility eligibility long term. After struggling, by his standards, at Triple-A, Calhoun did get 33 games with Texas last campaign, and he slashed .222/.269/.333 with two homers. The good news for owners is that he does not strike out, with a 4% K-BB rate over his time in the minors. When his approach does click, the batting average should have a high floor, even if owners need to wait on the power to come around. The sneaky reason to add Calhoun this year is that Globe Life Park might be the best hitters park in the country, with a 1.352 Run factor in 2018. Add in a 1.273 homer factor, and there is no better spot for an elite hitting prospect to put it together. Slotted to start on the bench with Texas, if there is a player who can hit his way into the line-up, it would be Calhoun. Add in the 387 ADP since January 1, and there are plenty of reasons to target Calhoun as the latest post-hype hitter to make it all count.
