Sam Darnold 2022 Outlook: Do Not Draft Him, Even If There's A Fire
2 years agoCarolina Panthers' quarterback Sam Darnold showed us last year that even when you think you can trust him, you can't trust him. He started off the season on fire where he completed 99 passes for 1,189 yards and five touchdowns, and added five rushing touchdowns, all in his first four games as a Panther. Over this span, he averaged 28.7 fantasy points per game and was the QB5, and he finished as the QB1 overall in Week 4 with 38.6 points. Just when fantasy managers were starting to believe in the renewed Adam Gase-free Darnold, he developed what can only be referred to as an extreme case of the yips. Over the rest of the season, Darnold finished as the QB 36, which included six out of his remaining eight games played with under 14 fantasy points, three of which he fell into the single-digits. He only threw four more touchdowns on the entire season compared to 10 interceptions, and he surpassed 200 passing yards only twice after Week 4. Clearly, the Panthers knew they needed to do something at quarterback, so they re-signed Cam Newton in the middle of the year, which did not help, and the team recently traded for the disgruntled Baker Mayfield from the Cleveland Browns. The Panthers also drafted Matt Corrall out of Ole Miss. It appears Darnold's time as the starter in Carolina is over, and very likely so are his opportunities as a starter in the NFL. He should not be drafted under any circumstances in 1QB leagues, and even in 2QB leagues, he is nothing more than a low-end QB3.
