Jose Bautista Looking For A New Opportunity
7 years agoFree agent outfielder Jose Bautista saw his statistics drop heavily last season and has struggled to find a team in free agency. Last season, Bautista hit .203 with 23 home runs and 65 RBI in 157 games, posting a career-worst .308 OBP. This came after he posted a .234 batting average and 22 home runs in 2016, but he only played 116 two seasons ago and still walked enough to post a .366 OBP. He has now seen his OPS drop in each of the last four seasons (from .928 in 2014 to just .674 last season) and the 37-year-old may just not have anything left in the tank. While Bautista may have slipped a bit, he did hit 40 home runs in 2015 and had a .372 OBP in nine-plus seasons with the Blue Jays. After making above-average contact the last few years, Bautista's Contact% plummeted to 73.3% and his swinging strike rate jumped three points to 10.9%, contributing to a 25% strikeout rate that was the highest of his career. When Bautista did hit the ball, the outcomes were not much better; he hit more flies but turned fewer of them into homers (with a 11.9% HR/FB rate vs. 16.3% in 2016) and his exit velocity on fly balls and line drives approached the league average. It will be tough for Bautista to break onto a team in a starting role and he should not be drafted in mixed leagues. That being said, if you are in an OPS league and Bautista regains his plate discipline, he could be a decent sleeper.
