Jordan Montgomery 2022 Player Outlook: Solid First Full Season From TJS Offers Promise For 2022
3 years agoFollowing a 2020 season in which he put up a 5.11 ERA over 44.0 IP, it would've been easy to dismiss Jordan Montgomery from fantasy relevance. His 2018 TJS and the shortened 2020 season meant he'd managed just 75.1 IP across three seasons but a closer look at his underlying numbers from 2020 did give us reason to believe in Montgomery last year. Across his ten starts in 2020, Montgomery had a 3.82 xERA, 3.65 xFIP and 3.84 SIERA with a 24.4% K%. Those numbers were closely matched by Montgomery in 2021. In 157.1 IP (30 starts) last year, Montgomery had a 3.83 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 24.5% K%. His 4.09 xERA, 3.93 xFIP and 4.07 SIERA offer support to the possibility of another sub-4.00 ERA in 2022. The Yankees disappointing offense limited Montgomery to just six wins last year, also not helped by only reaching 6.0 IP on ten occasions. But they have improved on defense this year and should be better offensively this year. Although the Yankees don't tend to let their starters go too deep in games, Montgomery should see an uptick in his workload a further year removed from TJS. Montgomery currently has an ADP of ~211 (59th SP) but ranked 35th in K's and 54th in ERA among pitchers with at least 100.0 IP in 2021. Not bad considering it was his first full year since undergoing TJS and there's no reason to believe he can't at least put up similar numbers in 2022.
