Harrison Smith 2020 Outlook: Annually Solid IDP Play Will Continue
5 years agoWhen you draft Harrison Smith in an IDP format, you are not targeting him for elite tackle numbers at defensive back. Smith ranked 15th among safeties in tackles last season with 85. Those are certainly respectable totals, but Smith’s ideal impact comes from his versatility as a playmaker. He can get you some good bonus production as a turnover generator and he may chip in a few sacks as well. He has picked off 11 passes over the past three seasons and has recovered four fumbles in the past two years. Smith only had one sack in 2019 but did have three the year before. He also totaled 11 passes defensed last season. Smith is also quite durable despite his hard-hitting style, having missed just six games since 2014. While the Vikings’ fortunes have fluctuated over the past decade, Smith has remained a steady presence and is reliable in terms of fantasy expectations. He was named to Pro Football Focus’ All-Decade Team. Smith has a consensus ranking of No. 28 overall at IDP and is the sixth-ranked defensive back. He is entering his age 31 season and the Vikings could get out of his contract after this season. So there is extra motivation there for another solid campaign. He should be taken as a surefire DB starter after the very top-shelf players at the position have been picked.
