Evan Engram 2019 Outlook: The Next Elite Tight End?
6 years agoWith Odell Beckham Jr. gone it will fall to others on the Giants roster to pick up the slack. One of them will be Saquon Barkley, but in the passing game it is finally time for Evan Engram to break out. Since coming into the league in 2017, the consensus has been that Engram is more of a big wide receiver and less of a tight end. It is time for him to prove those people correct. Golden Tate and Sterling Shepard will provide a solid base for the receiving group, but it will be Engram who will push it over the top.
In 2017, playing the majority of his rookie season with no Beckham on the field, Engram had 115 targets which he converted into 64 receptions for 722 yards and six touchdowns. With the return of Beckham in 2018 the numbers for Engram dropped dramatically to 45 receptions and 577 yards. While some of this can for sure be reasoned away by playing in four fewer games due to injury, the reduction of targets from 115 to 64 shows even if he was playing in more games, the target numbers had gone way down.
With the path now clear again, his targets should increase substantially and with the improvement in his catch percentage from 55% as a rookie to 70% last season he will convert more of these targets into statistics for your fantasy team. He may not join the elite three at the top of the tight end rankings this season, but he is the leader of the next tier of players for sure.
With the top three tight ends all going in the second or third-round it is an excellent value to get Engram as the last pick in the fourth or beginning of the fifth round. He is one tight end who can be drafted high amongst the many who you should not reach for in drafts. The talent of Engram is there and with Beckham gone the opportunity is now also there. He is the clear number four at the tight end position, and there is a path, all be it slim, to a potential finish this season even higher than that.
