Dez Bryant 2019 Outlook: Ready to Rebound
6 years agoAfter being released by the Cowboys before last season Dez Bryant was unable to catch on anywhere. However, when injuries hit a number of teams early in the season, he finally found a home in New Orleans alongside Michael Thomas. Or at least this was the plan. Instead, on the first day of practice, he tore his ACL. Still on the Saints roster heading into training camp in 2019 Bryant is hoping to make an impact for a Super Bowl contender. If he is fully healthy, he is still young enough to do just this.
With 531 career receptions in 113 games, he is not known as a high reception receiver. But with 71 touchdowns in those games, he is a good touchdown producer. This will lend itself well to what New Orleans needs. With Thomas as the alpha dog in the receiver’s group, there will not be a massive target load for a player who requires such to be effective. With his career average of a touchdown on 7.5% of receptions, then if he can bring down 55 receptions for the Saints and add an additional eight touchdowns to the mix, that would be very happy return indeed.
This is very ambitious as at 30 years old it will be difficult for him to come back from his multiple injuries to make such an impact. With Ted Ginn, Keith Kirkwood and even Tre'Quan Smith looking to fill the second receiver role the room is going to be crowded. Can Dez Bryant still be a good receiver? Sure. But will he be is the unknown. Until we see what he has during training camp and how the team plans to use him he should not be drafted.
The Saints have a great offense for sure. Averaging 35.1 points per game was good enough for third in the NFL in 2018. But this was without Bryant, and the offense has only changed slightly. At this point save the draft pick you may have spent on Bryant and instead go after a young running back or wide receiver who may get an opportunity to flourish. Dez Bryant will likely be there on waivers when you want him.
