Brandon Morrow Could Close For Cubs In 2018
7 years agoNewly acquired relief pitcher Brandon Morrow is a candidate to close for the Cubs in 2018. Morrow is coming off a year in which he likely saved his Major League career. Moving from a starting pitcher to a relief role, he put up outstanding numbers for the Dodgers in a setup role. In 45 games, Morrow pitched to a 2.06 ERA with a 0.91 WHIP and 10.3 K/9. His big year earned him a nice multi-year deal with the Cubs. Morrow is likely to get the first shot to become the Cubs closer as Wade Davis has moved onto the Rockies. As long as he remains in the closer role, he will be worth owning, but note that he has never been a closer and only has 18 career saves, 16 of which came between 2008 and 2009. Should he not be rewarded the closer role, he can still provide value in leagues that value holds. His biggest competition for the closer role in 2018 will be Carl Edwards and Steve Cishek.
