Anthony Rendon 2022 Player Outlook: Decline Is Real Following Injury-Riddled 2022
3 years agoLos Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon played just 58 games last year with three stints on the injured list, including a hip ailment that ended his season on July 4. He batted .240 with six home runs, 34 RBI, 24 runs, and no stolen bases. Even before the plethora of injuries, Rendon was showing signs of decline. In 2020, his Barrel% dropped to 6.3% after back-to-back seasons above 10%, and his xSLG fell to .467, which, at the time, was the lowest since 2016. Health should entail a rebound in the home run department, but the 31-year-old won't be the 30 HR slugger of before. During 2020, Rendon failed to hit .300 for the first time in four seasons with a .286 batting average, backed by a .286 xBA, a consequence of a 6.1 HardHit% decrease from his 2019 campaign. Last year, he still showed a knack for contact, striking out 16.5% of the time, so there's reason to believe he'll be a .280 hitter again, but not much more than that. The Angels lineup will include solid hitters in front of Rendon and his 13 BB% over the past three seasons means he'll be a contributor in RBI and runs. He won't steal much, though, with below-average sprint speed and no stolen bases over the last two years. Rendon's 109 ADP is a high price to pay for a former slugger that won't run, especially considering the injury risk involved.
