Rashaad Penny 2018 Outlook: The Surprise First Round Pick
6 years agoSeptember 15th, 2015. That is the last time Marshawn Lynch stepped on the field as a Seattle Seahawk and is the last time the Seahawks had a respectable run game. Since that time, the Seahawks have tried several different options and have either dealt with ineffective play or injuries. When the Seahawks decided to jump on Rashaad Penny in the first round in this year’s rookie draft, it surprised a lot of us. What is Penny going to do that other backs couldn’t the past two years?
Right now the backfield battle in Seattle seems to be down to Chris Carson and Penny. Carson has looked great this off-season, but Penny knows how it is to be the overlooked. Penny saw limited action during his first three seasons at San Diego State but during his senior year he showed the ability that made him a first round pick. Penny rushed for 2,248 yards on 289 rushes and another 135 receiving yards on 19 receptions with 25 total touchdowns.
Penny’s ability to contribute in the run game will be the reason he’s an RB2 in 2018. The Seahawks are going to be playing catchup a lot this season and Wilson could look to use Penny as a security blanket for quick passes to get out of trouble. With the departure of Jimmy Graham and Paul Richardson, there will be some extra targets headed towards Penny.
