Budda Baker 2020 Outlook: Top-Three DB Potential
5 years agoArizona Cardinals free safety Budda Baker flourished as a versatile, moveable piece during the 2019 season. Baker finished with 225.2 points in IDP leagues (#11 overall and the #1 safety). The third-year safety had 147 tackles, 104 solo tackles, seven tackles for loss, six passes defended, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. He averaged 14.1 points per week last season, leading the league in solo tackles while finishing fourth for overall tackles. Vance Joseph, the Cardinals defensive coordinator, moved the former Washington Husky all over the field to maximize his versatility, as evidenced by the wide range of statistics he collected. One potential hurdle for Baker's production in 2020 is the addition of top-10 draft pick Isaiah Simmons. While at Clemson, Simmons would be used as a pass-rusher on one play while dropping into coverage at safety the next. The Cardinals have already said they plan on acclimating Simmons to the NFL by keeping him at linebacker his rookie season, allowing Baker to maintain his role as the Cardinals' defensive chess piece for at least one more year. Baker doesn't generate many interceptions as a safety, but his versatile role and his sure tackling keep him in the conversation for the first DB drafted in IDP leagues in 2020.
