Blake Treinen 2022 Player Outlook: Fantasy Value Plummets After Dodgers Acquire Craig Kimbrel
3 years agoLos Angeles Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen entered the offseason as the top option in the bullpen to see save opportunities after the departure of longtime closer Kenley Jansen. That was until they struck a deal with the Chicago White Sox, receiving fellow reliever Craig Kimbrel for outfielder A.J. Pollock. Now with the native of Alabama in town, Treinen looks to be a set-up man again. The right-hander's still a great pitcher and one who posted a 1.99 ERA, 29.7 K%, and 0.98 WHIP last season. These numbers likely won't be repeated, but Treinen can still be a top arm in the game. His repertoire does a great job getting batters to chase, including a 31.8% mark in 2021. Treinen's slider (45.8% whiff rate) and four-seamer (35.9% whiff rate) helped him produce a 28.9% whiff rate and a 12.9% swinging-strike rate. Not only does the 33-year-old miss bats, but his barrel rate, average exit velocity, hard-hit rate, and expected slugging percentage all placed in the 98th percentile or better and lead to an otherwordly 2.45 xERA. ATC projects Treinen for a 3.32 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 73 strikeouts across 66 innings. Sadly, though, this will only take fantasy managers so far and will need more than a few saves here and there to justify drafting him at his ADP of 181. Other relievers such as Taylor Rogers and David Bednar are going later than Treinen and should deliver more in the save department.
