Week 13 Fantasy Football Matchups We Love: The Fantasy Matchmaker

Rhamondre Stevenson - Fantasy Football Rankings, Draft Sleepers, NFL Injury News

Welcome back to the Week 13 Fantasy Matchmaker article looking at Week 12 matchups we love! This is my weekly series for RotoBaller where I look at the matchup strength for pretty much every viable fantasy football player across the fantasy skill positions.

With only two weeks left in the fantasy football regular season, each decision we make becomes more and more crucial. I am here to assist with those decisions from the angle of matchup strength. How good or bad an opponent has been against one of the fantasy skill positions should not be the only factor in your weekly decisions. Just like there are no single metrics that tell the whole story or predict the future of a player’s fantasy success (or lack thereof), environmental conditions such as matchup strength should be used in conjunction with other factors. I am not telling you to start or sit the players I highlight each week in this series. Rather, I am highlighting individual player matchups I like and dislike, typically meaning I think they will either exceed their positional rank for that week or will fall short.

In this article, I will present my updated rankings for matchup strengths for the QB, WR, RB, and TE positions based on my adjusted fantasy points allowed process and present some players whose matchups I love, and other players whose matchups I am trying to avoid.

My Methodology

The common method for analyzing fantasy football matchups and the strength of the opponent is by fantasy points allowed. How many fantasy points has that opponent been allowing to that position on average? This is something I track weekly, but I take it a bit further as only looking at raw fantasy points allowed per game does not tell the whole story. My strength of schedule scoring entering Week 13 includes what each team has given up in Weeks 1-12 (including the average). I also incorporate “opponent-adjusted” data, looking at what teams are giving up compared to what their opponents have averaged at each fantasy skill position.

This is also called Points Over Average (POA) allowed. For example, when comparing raw fantasy points allowed per game and POA allowed per game, one of the biggest discrepancies is the Vikings versus QBs. Minnesota ranks 22nd versus QBs in raw fantasy PPG allowed. But they are ranked 10 spots better at 12th when adjusting for opponents faced. What this means is while the Vikings have given up the 11th-most PPG to the QB position when you look at what they have given up to QBs compared to that QB group’s average PPG, they are closer to being a Top 10 toughest matchup. My overall matchup strength rankings incorporate season-long POA allowed, POA allowed over the last five games, and POA allowed over the last three games.

RotoBaller generates positional and overall player rankings (all positions) for Points Per Reception (PPR), half PPR, and Standard (no PPR) each week, which will be included when looking at matchups for each positional group. The idea is to show each relevant skill position player’s matchup and positional rank for that week. Each table will be filtered based on the positional rankings so you can see the matchup strength for the must-starts as well as for borderline starters, flex options, and desperation dart throws. I encourage you to check out RotoBaller’s Week 13 PPR ranks, available here. Players on the Cowboys and Seahawks who played in Week 13 Thursday Night Football are not included in this article.

Week 13 Fantasy Football Quarterback Matchups

The following shows the projected matchup strength for the QB position in Week 13. The table includes the QB, the Week 13 positional rank (according to RotoBaller), the opponent, and the opponent’s projected rank versus fantasy QBs according to my scoring system. The table is filtered in the same order as the RotoBaller positional rankings.

The additional data points I am including for QBs are the projected point totals in each game, the spread, and the implied total points for the QB’s team (all from FanDuel.com).

Week 12: QB Matchups We Love

Russell Wilson (Denver Broncos)

Week 13 Rank: QB8
Opponent: @HOU
Opponent Rank vs. QB: 31st

Denver travels to Houston in Week 13 where Russell Wilson will face the second-most favorable matchup for fantasy QBs. The 47.5-point over-under is tied for the second-highest of Week 13, and even though the Broncos are road underdogs, they have a solid implied total of 22 points. The Texans started the season strong against QBs with a negative POA allowed in three of their first four games. But they’ve allowed a positive POA in every game since Week 4, leading to a POA allowed of +4.8 PPG over the last five games and +6.1 PPG over the last three.

Russell Wilson hasn’t been spectacular this year as the current overall QB14. But he has faced one of the toughest schedules for fantasy QBs, with only two positive QB matchups (BUF and WAS). With the Broncos storming back into the AFC playoff hunt and a potential high-scoring game, Wilson is set up to have his best fantasy outing of the season.

Brock Purdy (San Francisco 49ers)

Week 13 Rank: QB6
Opponent: @PHI
Opponent Rank vs. QB: 29th

We saw the risks with Brock Purdy last week against the Seahawks. The 49ers won handily but accumulated most of their points from rushing TDs. A big passing day from Purdy was not needed. Week 13 sets up to be a different story in this crucial NFC showdown with the Eagles. Philadelphia has stifled opposing running games all season but is the fourth-most favorable matchup for QBs. The 49ers are slight road favorites in a game with a 47.5-point over-under. Christian McCaffrey is as matchup-proof as they come, but the 49ers should have to rely heavily on the pass, making Purdy one of the better QB options in Week 13.

Week 13: Not Great, Bob – QB Matchups to Avoid

Jordan Love (Green Bay Packers)

Week 13 Rank: QB9
Opponent: KC
Opponent Rank vs. QB: 5th

Jordan Love faces off against the Chiefs in Week 13, a team that ranks as the fifth-toughest QB matchup in adjusted fantasy points allowed. Kansas City has allowed a negative QB POA in eight of 11 games this season and has a season-long POA allowed of -2.8 PPG. The Packers are six-point home underdogs with an implied total of only 18.3 points. The Chiefs have one of the highest pressure rates in the NFL and Jordan Love ranks 24th in completion percentage under pressure. If the Chiefs can stay in the ballpark of their typical amount of pressure it could be a long day for Love and the Packers.

Baker Mayfield (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Week 13 Rank: QB13
Opponent: CAR
Opponent Rank vs. QB: 2nd

Baker Mayfield has played well in positive matchups this year but has struggled against the tougher QB matchups. Mayfield hasn’t surpassed 15 fantasy points in either of the last two games against the Colts (10th) and 49ers (1st). The Buccaneers face the Panthers in Week 13, currently, the second-toughest QB matchup in adjusted fantasy points allowed. Carolina has also been one of the friendliest RB opponents, which leads to the typical question.

Are they strong against the pass or are teams just choosing to run it on them more often? It doesn’t matter. Regardless of the reason, the Panthers have held QBs to a negative POA in all but two games this season, and with an over-under of only 36.5 points, the path to a big fantasy day for Mayfield is narrow.

The following charts show the ROS strength of schedule for the QB position. The chart on the left shows Weeks 13-17 and the SOS rank for each team’s remaining QB schedule. The chart on the right shows only the Fantasy Playoff schedule for each team, and where that schedule ranks in matchup difficulty.

QB Rest of Season Strength of Schedule

The following charts show the rest of season strength of schedule for the QB position. The chart on the left shows Weeks 13-17 and the SOS rank for each team’s remaining QB schedule. The chart on the right shows only the Fantasy Playoff schedule for each team, and where that schedule ranks in matchup difficulty.

Week 13 Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Matchups

The following WR table shows the top 70 WRs for Week 13 (according to RotoBaller; PPR), opponent, and opponent rank versus fantasy WRs.

Week 13: WR Matchups We Love

Diontae Johnson (Pittsburgh Steelers)

Week 13 Rank: WR20
Opponent: ARI
Opponent Rank vs. WR: 21st

The Steelers are at home in Week 13 against the 21st-ranked Cardinals versus fantasy WRs. Diontae Johnson has been disappointing over the last three games with two games under 20 receiving yards. However, his WR schedule has also been relatively difficult since Week 9 against the Titans. Johnson’s target share in the last two games is still a solid 28.1% (eight targets in each game).

The Cardinals' defense has alternated between a negative and positive WR POA allowed throughout the season, so their 12th-most favorable rank versus WRs is somewhat volatile. But this volatility loosely lines up with their home-road splits. On the road, Arizona has a WR POA allowed of +3.7 PPG. At home, that number falls to -0.5 PPG.

Josh Downs (Indianapolis Colts)

Week 13 Rank: WR23
Opponent: @TEN
Opponent Rank vs. WR: 29th

I am going back to the Josh Downs well in Week 13. This call did not quite work out last week with Downs in a great matchup against the Buccaneers, but Downs did earn 13 targets in that game, which tied Michael Pittman Jr. for the team lead and was good for a 31.7% target share. That heavy usage unfortunately did not translate to a big fantasy day for Downs. Downs get an equally-advantageous matchup in Week 13 against the Titans, ranked as the fourth-most favorable matchup for WRs. Historically, players who earn a target share above 30% in a game typically finish in at least the Top 24 for that week. Week 12 was somewhat of an outlier result when looking at the historical data. I see no reason why Downs does not approach 30% again this week, and I expect a much bigger fantasy day for the rookie.

Week 13: Not Great, Bob – WR Matchups to Avoid

Nico Collins (Houston Texans)

Week 13 Rank: WR14
Opponent: DEN
Opponent Rank vs. WR: 2nd

Nico Collins has a rough matchup in Week 13 against the second-ranked Broncos. Denver has held WRs to a negative POA in all but two games this season, and have been especially brutal since their Week 9 bye. While their season-long POA is an impressive -5.3 PPG, in the last three games it dropped to -16.9 PPG, including holding the Bills’ WR group 22.1 points below their season average in Buffalo.

I can’t bring myself to bench Collins’ teammate Tank Dell, but I’m looking for another option when it comes to Collins.

Chris Godwin (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Week 13 Rank: WR24
Opponent: CAR
Opponent Rank vs. WR: 3rd

Chris Godwin faces the third-ranked Panthers in Week 13 and has not been having the type of season we have come to expect when Godwin has been healthy. Godwin enters Week 13 as the WR42 in PPR PPG, with only two games above 14 fantasy points on the season. Since Week 7, Godwin has averaged only 6.6 targets per game, which might not seem that bad, but he averaged 8.2 targets per game in Weeks 1-7 and his career average is above seven. Godwin is a WR who has relied on volume in his above-average fantasy career and he’s not seeing enough in 2023 to remain as the perennial WR2 (and sometimes WR1) he has been in years past. And Week 13 does not look like a remedy as Carolina has allowed a bottom-10 target share to WRs at less than 60% per game. I do not think Godwin sneaks into the Top 24 in Week 13.

WR Rest of Season Strength of Schedule

The following charts show the rest of season strength of schedule for the WR position. The chart on the left shows Weeks 13-17 and the SOS rank for each team’s remaining WR schedule. The chart on the right shows only the Fantasy Playoff schedule for each team, and where that schedule ranks in matchup difficulty.

Week 13 Fantasy Football Running Back Matchups

The following RB table shows the top 50 RBs for Week 13 (according to RotoBaller; PPR), opponent, and opponent rank versus fantasy RBs.

This chart also includes my rankings for RB points from receiving output only (PFR). The PFR ranks are included next to the overall RB ranks. What we are looking for with that side-by-side inclusion are discrepancies that may change the outlook of a matchup (depending on the RB).

Currently, the notable differences in rank between RBs in general and RB PFR include the following:

  • The Saints rank 14 spots better versus RB PFR (1st) than overall RB (15th), ranking as the toughest matchup in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs via PFR. Impacted players: Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.
  • The Cardinals rank 11 spots better versus RB PFR (17th) than overall RB (28th), ranking as the 17th-toughest matchup in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs via PFR. Impacted players: Jaylen Warren and Najee Harris.
  • The Packers rank 10 spots better versus RB PFR (8th) than overall RB (18th), ranking as the eighth-toughest matchup in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs via PFR. Impacted players: Isiah Pacheco.
  • The Buccaneers are 11 spots worse versus RB PFR (13th) than overall RB (2nd), ranking 13th in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs via PFR. Impacted players: Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders.
  • The 49ers are 11 spots worse versus RB PFR (15th) than overall RB (4th), ranking 15th in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs via PFR. D’Andre Swift and Kenneth Gainwell.
  • The Falcons rank 15 spots worse versus RB PFR (22nd) than overall RB (7th), ranking as the 11th-most favorable matchup in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs via PFR. Impacted players: Breece Hall.
  • The Jaguars are 19 spots worse versus RB PFR (31st) than overall RB (12th), ranking as the second-easiest matchup in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs via PFR. Impacted players: Joe Mixon.

Here is the chart showing these rank differences more clearly:

Now onto Week 13 RB matchups I love.

Week 13: RB Matchups We Love

Rhamondre Stevenson (New England Patriots)

Week 13 Rank: RB12
Opponent: LAC
Opponent Rank vs. RB: 22nd
Opponent Rank vs. RB PFR: 26th

Rhamondre Stevenson has been putting some distance between his fantasy output and the rumblings earlier in the season that he was one of the biggest busts of 2023 fantasy drafts. And the concerns were justified. Through the first five weeks of the season, Stevenson’s per-game averages were as follows:

  • PPG: 9.1 (RB27)
  • Rush Attempts: 13.6
  • Rushing Yards: 37.6
  • Yards Per Carry: 2.8
  • Targets: 3.6
  • Receptions: 2.4
  • Receiving Yards: 17.4

With only one rushing TD and zero receiving TDs in that span, this sub-par fantasy production culminated in a Week 5 blowout (shutout) loss to the Saints, a game in which Stevenson managed only 24 rushing yards on eight carries and zero catches on two targets, all on a season-low 50% snap share.

But the former Sooner’s fantasy fortunes started changing in Week 6. And not because the Patriots found their groove. New England only has two wins on the season, but, starting in Week 6, here are the same per-game statistics for Stevenson:

  • PPG: 16.2 (RB6)
  • Rush Attempts: 13.2
  • Rushing Yards: 65.3
  • Yards Per Carry: 5.0
  • Targets: 5.3
  • Receptions: 4.2
  • Receiving Yards: 25.2
  • Rushing TDs: 3 (total)

Stevenson has an excellent matchup in Week 13 against the Chargers. The Chargers are the 11th-most favorable matchup for RBs overall but have been even more friendly to pass-catching RBs, ranking as the seventh-easiest matchup in RB PFR.

Jaylen Warren (Pittsburgh Steelers)

Week 13 Rank: RB18
Opponent: ARI
Opponent Rank vs. RB: 28th
Opponent Rank vs. RB PFR: 17th

Jaylen Warren had a disappointing fantasy day in the Steelers’ first post-Matt Canada game of 2023. But do not let that scare you away from starting him in Week 13. The matchup against the Cardinals, currently the fifth-most favorable matchup for RBs, is ideal for both Warren and teammate Najee Harris. But I prefer Warren in this game.

Over the last four games, Warren has averaged 12 rush attempts for 91.8 rushing yards per game (7.7 YPC), and he has scored twice. Warren is the PPR RB4 in that span at 16 PPG. And while his targets have decreased slightly as of late, he has caught all 13 of his 13 targets in those four games. Warren’s explosiveness and big play potential against the Cardinals' defense make him one of my favorite starts in Week 13.

Week 13: Not Great Bob, RB Matchups to Avoid

Brian Robinson Jr. (Washington Commanders)

Week 13 Rank: RB22
Opponent: MIA
Opponent Rank vs. RB: 3rd
Opponent Rank vs. RB PFR: 2nd

Brian Robinson Jr. plays at home in Week 13 but draws a matchup with the Dolphins, currently the third-toughest matchup for RBs in adjusted fantasy points allowed. Part of what has led to Robinson being the RB15 in PPR PPG is an unexpected uptick in receiving output this season, including 15 catches on 18 targets for 189 receiving yards over the last three games. I likely would be higher on Robinson if the Dolphins were not even more stingy versus RB PFR. Miami currently ranks as the second-toughest opponent for RB PFR, behind only the Saints. The Dolphins have allowed a negative POA to both RBs overall and RB PFR in eight of 11 games, and their season-long POA allowed for both is right around -2.7 PPG. The Dolphins have surrendered 90+ rushing yards to RBs only twice this season, and have not allowed a rushing TD over the last four games. I am avoiding Robinson if at all possible.

AJ Dillon (Green Bay Packers)

Week 13 Rank: RB26
Opponent: KC
Opponent Rank vs. RB: 9th
Opponent Rank vs. RB PFR: 6th

Although not quite as tough as Miami, AJ Dillon faces the Chiefs in Week 13 currently ranked in the Top 10 toughest matchups for both RBs overall and RB PFR. Dillon’s season has been the epitome of “meh” so this is not a bold call. But, with six teams on bye and Aaron Jones unlikely to play after having not practiced this week while he battles back from an MCL injury he sustained in Week 11, Dillon may look appealing. And in certain cases, you may not have a choice. I have Dillon in a few leagues with three flex spots where there is not a better option. But, even with the bye limitations this week, I am avoiding Dillon in most cases.

Dillon has had a slightly negative RB strength of schedule thus far, but his season-long averages do not inspire confidence that will change in this negative matchup against the Chiefs. Dillon has averaged 11.9 rush attempts per game, but has only scored once and has only exceeded 70 rushing yards once. He has seen an uptick in receiving output since Week 5, but that increase only took him from just over one target per game in Weeks 1-5 to around three targets per game since. That is not enough to tip the scales for Dillon, especially with the Chiefs being the sixth-toughest opponent for RB PFR.

RB Rest of Season Strength of Schedule

The following charts show the rest of season strength of schedule for the RB position (both RB overall and RB PFR). The chart on the left shows Weeks 13-17 and the SOS rank for each team’s remaining RB schedule. The chart on the right shows only the Fantasy Playoff schedule for each team, and where that schedule ranks in matchup difficulty.

Week 13 Fantasy Football Tight End Matchups

The following TE table shows the top 25 TEs for Week 13 (according to RotoBaller; PPR), opponent, and opponent rank versus fantasy TEs.

Week 13: TE Matchups We Love

Logan Thomas (Washington Commanders)

Week 13 Rank: TE9
Opponent: MIA
Opponent Rank vs. TE: 23rd

The Commanders will need to pass more often than not if they want to hang with the Dolphins in Week 13. That sets up for a potentially nice game for Logan Thomas with the Dolphins ranking 23rd in adjusted fantasy points allowed to the TE position. Since his one-catch-for-two-yards outing in Week 6 against the Falcons, Thomas has averaged six targets per game and had at least five targets in five of the last six games. The Dolphins have allowed the sixth-highest TE target share (22.6%) in the NFL and will be his best matchup in the last seven games.

Week 12: Not Great Bob, TE Matchups to Avoid

Cade Otton (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Week 13 Rank: TE13
Opponent: CAR
Opponent Rank vs. TE: 6th

On a day in which the University of Washington Huskies are playing in the Pac-12 Championship game for a spot in the College Football Playoffs, it pains me to include former UW TE Cade Otton on the “matchups to avoid” list. But the Panthers have been the sixth-toughest TE matchup in adjusted fantasy points allowed to the position. Over the last five games, Carolina has allowed an average of only 3.8 receptions and 37.6 receiving yards to TEs, and only one TD in that span. Their allowed TE POA in that span is -3.0 PPG, which is a significant difference in average PPG for the TE position.

Otton has been heavily involved in the Buccaneers offense, averaging 5.5 targets per game over the last six games with two receiving TDs. I just do not see a path to a usable fantasy day for the second-year TE against this defense, as any passing success the Buccaneers find will likely go through the red-hot Mike Evans.

TE Rest of Season Strength of Schedule

The following charts show the rest of season strength of schedule for the TE position. The chart on the left shows Weeks 13-17 and the SOS rank for each team’s remaining TE schedule. The chart on the right shows only the Fantasy Playoff schedule for each team, and where that schedule ranks in matchup difficulty.

Week 12 Postmortems

I am fine with being wrong about things, especially when it comes to fantasy football, where most of us are wrong more often than we are right. Each week, I will include a postmortem of the previous week’s players whose fantasy matchups I loved and those whom I advised to avoid. I will subjectively judge myself based on the results of the previous week, with my take either being a “HIT” or a “MISS,” or in some cases a “PUSH.”
