2022 Charles Schwab Challenge - PGA DFS Overview

The Course: Colonial Country Club

Par 70 - 7,209 Yards, Greens: Bent, Designed By: Perry Maxwell & John Bredemus

You guys might recognize the name Perry Maxwell above, as Maxwell was the original architect of last week's Southern Hills layout. While they are certainly very different golf courses - especially off the tee - there is some kinship between the two with their emphasis on approach shots that target contoured, Bent grass greens.

This 1936 design was recognized as an instant classic. Since Colonial made its debut on the PGA Tour in 1946, the event has been played under many names, but the course has continued to endure as a mainstay on the schedule. The tight fairways and multiple doglegs that are cut through the course's pecan trees make this layout difficult to overpower, with a premium being placed on a player's ball striking, shotmaking, and short-game abilities. While distance is not something we ever want to totally dismiss, it does take something of a backseat in importance this week. Basically, this layout serves as an "equalizer" for the game's shorter hitters and, from a DFS perspective, brings a large portion of the field into consideration.

Fantasy Golf Lineup Picks for FanDuel (PGA DFS)

We have tons of great weekly PGA articles, DFS analysis, tools and DFS advice. Be sure to read our other fantastic articles regarding this week's event including DFS lineup picks for DraftKings/FanDuel, betting advice and DFS prop picks.

High-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Jordan Spieth ($11,400)

Spieth disappointed a lot of DFS players as the chalk last week, but his ball-striking wasn't the culprit. The Texan remained elite from tee to green at Southern Hills, as he gained an impressive 8.7 strokes T2G, which was the 12th-best mark in the field. However, his putter betrayed him horribly in the PGA and he lost a massive 3.2 strokes on the greens.

While there are no guarantees that he finds the putter this week, the Charles Schwab represents the mother of all bounce-back spots for the Texan, as he brings his still-sharp ball-striking form to a Colonial layout on which he's been dominant throughout his career. His 67.64 career scoring average is the best in the field among those with a minimum of three starts at Colonial. He won the event in 2016 and has recorded an eye-opening three additional runner-ups (including in last year's edition) across nine career Schwab starts.

Max Homa ($10,800)

The popular Twitter personality continues to impress with his work on the golf course. Following a strong win at the Wells Fargo, Homa finally appeared to crack the major championship code last week at Southern Hills by recording a T13...his best career finish in a major. It has to be a confidence booster for the Cali native and it's interesting when we start considering just how high his ceiling truly is. Homa has been consistently excellent from T2G as of late and grades out second in this field in SG: Ball Striking over the last 12 rounds. He's gained a whopping average of 7.2 strokes T2G over his last five tournaments. His classy skill set - and growing confidence - should be a nice fit at Colonial, a course where he posted a T27 in 2019.

Tony Finau ($10,300)

Tony Finau doesn't seem to fit the "Colonial mold", but his Charles Schwab track record speaks for itself...six starts, six cuts made; a runner-up finish, and three additional top-25s. Finau stands sixth overall in this week's field in SG: Total (+26.87) in this event.

The Utah native suffered through a noticeable downswing at the outset of the year that included missing three of four cuts during one stretch. He has righted the ship as of late, gaining strokes T2G in each of his last five starts with a runner-up finish in Mexico standing as the highlight. Finau is undoubtedly trending in the right direction and gained strokes in every major statistical category last week at Southern Hills.

Mid-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Tommy Fleetwood ($9,800)

Like the aforementioned Tony Finau, Tommy Fleetwood has spent a little time in the golf wilderness lately. Once a mainstay in the OWGR top-15, Fleetwood's world ranking cratered to 50th earlier this year. However, the Englishman appears to have rediscovered his mojo in recent months. He's gained strokes T2G in each of his last five starts and his fifth-place finish in last week's PGA Championship was his best result in a major since the 2019 Open Championship. Fleetwood has gained strokes on average in every major statistical category over his last five starts and has posted top-25 results in six of seven. This will be his first time at Colonial, which is the only major knock I can level against him this week, but the Texas layout profiles as an excellent fit for his trending game.

Kevin Na ($9,800)

I don't always roster Kevin Na, but when I do it's on a course like this. No, this isn't a Dos Equis commercial, but Na certainly is the type of player with which we must be selective. This week's Schwab presents an environment in which we can feel confident (as confident as we can ever be with the WD-prone Na) with the light-hitting veteran. He's demonstrated an affinity for Colonial, winning the Schwab in 2019 and amassing an additional four top-10 finishes since 2005. Na has missed just one Schwab cut across 14 career appearances in the event and comes into this year's edition having gained strokes on Approach in each of his last four starts.

Davis Riley ($9,800)

We'll round out our little trio of $9.8k players with Davis Riley, a player that's the opposite of pretty much everyone else in this week's article. The 25-year-old rookie has no Colonial experience under his belt, but profiles as a nice fit for the legendary track. The rising superstar has looked the part as of late, following up a name-making playoff loss at the Valspar with consistently strong play throughout this month. Riley has gone T13-T9-T5 over his last three starts and his +11.4 SG: Ball Striking last week on a brutal Southern Hills layout is the type of performance that can't be ignored. He grades out 13th in Good Drives Gained over his last 12 rounds and has gained a combined 10.1 strokes on Approach over his last two starts. I'm willing to ride the hot hand with this talented young player.

Low-Priced FanDuel DFS Players

Brian Harman ($9,500)

The only thing that gives me pause this week with Brian Harman is that he seems almost too obvious. If we try not to "galaxy brain" this decision, the veteran makes all the sense in the world. Harman possesses a skill set that's extremely well suited for this Colonial layout. He's made the cut in eight consecutive trips to the Schwab, posting three top-10 finishes across those appearances. The diminutive lefty will try to make it nine straight this week and comes in with the type of form that makes it likely. Harman has gained five or more strokes on Approach in each of his last two starts.

Gary Woodland ($9,300)

Gary Woodland has posted a couple of pure duds in recent outings, but there have been enough encouraging signs to make me feel like he's underpriced here at $9.3k. The former U.S. Open has missed the cut in two of his last five starts but has still gained an average of four strokes T2G over those outings. The fit at Colonial is a good one, as Woody stands ninth in this week's field in Good Drives Gained over the last 12 rounds. He's found success in recent Schwab appearances, posting a T14 in last year's edition and a T9 in 2021.

Chris Kirk ($8,700)

It's not hard to envision Chris Kirk catching some ownership steam this week. Kirk heads to a Colonial golf course on which he won in 2015 and owns a 69.44 career scoring average on the heels of a sparkling T5 finish in last week's PGA Championship. The UGA alum has never missed a cut in 11 career Schwab appearances and - after gaining 10.8 strokes T2G at Southern Hills - has gained strokes T2G in every one of his 2022 starts! Kirk's bugaboo is the putter - he lost strokes putting in each of his four starts prior to the PGA - but Bent grass has historically been his best surface by a wide margin (Avg. +.1057 strokes gained on Bent) and he's been ultra-consistent in every other facet of the game throughout 2022.
