ANALYSIS: After having a modest role in his debut season, serving as the clear RB2 to James Conner, Trey Benson enjoyed a rather impressive opening showing in 2025. Facing the New Orleans Saints, Benson carried the ball eight times for 69 yards and caught his lone target for six yards. Benson's yardage total led the team on the ground and was 30 yards more than Conner tallied. However, Benson ran the ball four fewer times than the veteran.
Most of Benson's yardage total came on an impressive 52-yard run.
Even though Benson was still given fewer carries than Conner, Benson showed much more upside and looked like he took a step forward. During training camp, Benson received positive buzz from his coaching staff and was often described as the "1B" in the backfield. Following this game, it appears Benson has already claimed that role.
In 2024, Benson ran the ball just 4.8 times per game and only ran the ball eight or more times in just four contests.
Fantasy managers should continue to focus on their workload, but Benson has emerged as a must-add as he could carve out a fantasy viable role, despite serving as the No. 2 option in the backfield. While he has not emerged as a must-start player as his upside will remain capped, he is worth adding prior to Week 2 as he has emerged as an elite handcuff to an aging Conner, who may have lost a step in his age-30 season.
If Conner were to miss time, Benson could emerge as a league-winner.
