Jason Witten 2019 Outlook: Out of the Booth
5 years agoTough, durable, reliant. These are words which come to mind when you think of the career of Jason Witten. Even me, an Eagles fan has to remember the player he was. He was the reason the rule about helmets coming off ending a play came into being. You can’t forget the scene of him, helmetless running for an extra thirty yards against the Eagles.
Yes, the Cowboys needed a tight end to coach their young group, and maybe they should have made him a coach instead of a player. However, he is still going to help Dak Prescott in the passing game, and he will be a security blanket for him when plays break down. He will also be a voice of reason when things invariably go wrong. While all of these things are great for Dallas to have, they are not fantasy assets. Neither is Jason Witten for all intents and purposes.
Witten is a 37-year old tight end who was brought back to be a coach on the field. He may get 25 to 30 snaps a game. But even in the sea of misery, which is the tight end position, this does not make him a good draft pick. Players like Noah Fant in Denver, currently the TE23 in drafts is a better option than Witten. Even a second tight end on a good offense like Dallas Goedert in Philadelphia, coming off a rookie season in which he scored five touchdowns, is safer when it comes to your roster.
Jason Witten was a great player. 11 Pro Bowls and two All-Pro teams prove it. But his time is past. You didn’t waste a pick on Antonio Gates in 2018 and the same should be said about Witten in 2019.
