Corey Heim Upsets the Field with First NASCAR Cup Win at San Diego
Part-time 23XI Racing driver Corey Heim shocked the NASCAR world with an upset win in the Anduril 250 Race the Base at Naval Base Coronado. Heim started 13th in his first Cup start on a road course and did not show much speed during the first two stages of the race. In the first stage, Heim ended in 17th while in the second stage, he placed 21st at the end of it, but he did avoid all accidents and kept the car clean the whole time. In the final stage, Heim finally positioned himself as a serious contender as he made his way up through the field up to second behind Kyle Larson midway through the stage. Heim made up a six-second gap on Larson until they both pitted on lap 59 for the final time. When the race went through its final caution and ensuing restart, Heim followed his teammate, Tyler Reddick, past Larson and moved Carson Hocevar out of the way to take second. Heim and Reddick moved away from the rest of the field and had a final battle for the win, which ended with Heim taking the lead for good on lap 73 as he cruised to his first Cup Series win in his 13th Cup start. As a part-time driver, Heim is not competing for the Cup Series championship. Heim's next scheduled Cup start is at Chicagoland Speedway on July 5th.
