Gio Lopez Named As Wake Forest Starting Quarterback

Wake Forest named former South Alabama and North Carolina quarterback Gio Lopez as their 2026 starter. Lopez shined in his first year as a starter at South Alabama in 2024 with 2,559 passing yards and 18 touchdowns. He also ran for 465 yards and seven more touchdowns. His year at North Carolina in 2025 for NFL coaching legend Bill Belichick was much more subdued. Lopez threw for 1,747 yards and 10 touchdowns but only ran for 133 yards and three scores. Lopez will get his first start for Wake Forest next Thursday night, September 3, against Akron. --Mike Marteny - RotoBaller
