Bryce Love 2019 Outlook: No Love in Washington
6 years agoBryce Love cost himself money and draft position by returning to Stanford for his final collegiate season. Had he come out in 2017 he likely would have been a second or at worst a third-round pick. Instead, he did the noble thing by going back and it cost him. More importantly than the money lost by falling to the fourth round, he was injured and missed most of his final season trying to rehab.
Not only did this injury cost him his season at Stanford but it will likely cost him his rookie season in Washington. Not only is he going to a team who just spent a higher pick on a running back as recently as last season, but also to a team who has Adrian Peterson there to back him up when needed. This means that even if healthy he would have been buried on the depth chart for the season. And with the medical staff in Washington, who knows if he would be healthy anyway.
At 5’9 and 205 pounds, he is not the bell cow back some teams are looking for in today’s NFL. But he is a decent pass catcher and if he can get healthy for the future, he could easily take over the Chris Thompson role in the offense.
2019 is not the season to bet on Love in drafts. On a low-volume Washington offense, he would not have been a good bet, even if fully healthy. Wait and see what happens with him and with the health of Derrius Guice over the course of the season. If things look good? Take a chance on him in 2020. Otherwise, take him in dynasty only in the fourth round or later, and then pray he can get healthy.
