Players to Target in Trades for Fantasy Baseball
Logan Gilbert, SP, Seattle Mariners
Seattle Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert needed a bounce-back outing, and he definitely got one on Sunday against the Chicago White Sox, when he threw six shutout innings with just one hit allowed, no walks, and a season-high nine strikeouts. It was what fantasy managers were hoping for against a lackluster opponent following his four earned runs allowed in six innings to the first-place Atlanta Braves on May 4.
The 29-year-old former All-Star should be able to keep things rolling into his next scheduled outing this weekend versus a San Diego Padres team that currently ranks 27th in all of baseball with a .667 OPS. Overall, Gilbert is 2-3 on the season with a 3.78 ERA (3.90 FIP) and 1.16 WHIP with 52 strikeouts and 10 walks in 50 innings across his nine starts.
He should absolutely be in all starting lineups in traditional fantasy leagues this weekend when the Friars come to T-Mobile Park. Gilbert numbers have been solid despite sitting in the 10th percentile in hard-hit rate.
Verdict: Top buy-low candidate among starting pitchers. Gilbert has low-end SP1 upside that could still be acquired at a high discount.
Ceddanne Rafaela, 2B/OF, Boston Red Sox
After combining for a .248/.284/.402 slash line, .686 OPS, 31 home runs, 138 RBI, 39 stolen bases, and 154 runs scored in 308 regular-season games over the last two years as a full-time player in Beantown, outfielder/second baseman Ceddanne Rafaela has been a disappointment through 38 games in 2026. Going into Tuesday's action this week, the 25-year-old is slashing .269/.336/.400, but with a career-high .736 OPS, three home runs, 16 RBI, 17 runs, and only two stolen bases across 143 plate appearances.
Savvy fantasy managers should consider buying low on the Red Sox outfielder, even though he's currently in the 29th percentile in hard-hit rate and the 15th percentile in walk rate. So far in nine games in May, he's gone 10-for-35 (.286) at the plate with two home runs, six RBI, four runs scored, two stolen bases, two walks, and eight strikeouts.
Rafaela is probably never going to be an asset in on-base percentage unless he cleans up his plate approach, but as an everyday player, he should offer enough power and speed to potentially threaten for a 20-20 campaign if he stays healthy.
Verdict: Top buy-low target if looking for a potential 20/20 candidate.
Riley O'Brien, RP, St. Louis Cardinals
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Riley O'Brien has emerged as his team's primary closer with a strong start to the 2026 season. Across 19 innings, O'Brien has pitched to a 2.84 ERA and 0.95 WHIP with 23 strikeouts and 11 saves. However, the 31-year-old has run into a bit of a rough patch of late, as he's allowed six earned runs and blown two saves over his last 5 2/3 innings pitched. Even with the recent struggles, O'Brien's ridiculously dominant 29.3% K-BB rate indicates that the downturn is likely a momentary blip.
Still, O'Brien does not have a long track record as a closer, which could lead to him being on a shorter leash in the role. Fantasy managers should remain positive on O'Brien's season-long outlook, but his next few appearances are worth monitoring.
Verdict: Prime buy-low option among closers. His recent cold stretch has opened the door for managers to find a potential source of 25+ saves at a much lower cost.
Other Players to Target in Trades
- Fernando Tatis Jr., SD
- Garrett Crochet, BOS
Players to Trade Away for Fantasy Baseball
Kevin Gausman, SP, Toronto Blue Jays
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Kevin Gausman had a rough outing at home on Monday night, giving up seven runs (six earned) to the Rays on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings. He took the loss to fall to 2-3 on the season with a 3.86 ERA and 3.29 FIP. The 35-year-old righty reached a notable milestone by recording his 2,000th career strikeout, but it wasn't a strong outing overall.
He has allowed 13 runs on 20 hits in 16 1/3 innings over his last three starts, with three home runs against him. He'll look to get back on track on Sunday with a road matchup in Detroit against the Tigers. He's a fringe starting pitcher option in standard-sized leagues at this point, but he has proven in the past few years that he can find his rhythm even after tough stretches like this one.
Verdict: While Gausman showed flashes of upside earlier in the season, he has begun to face some regression. Managers should look to sell the veteran SP after a bounce-back effort.
Robbie Ray, SP, San Francisco Giants
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Robbie Ray has been one of his team's lone bright spots early in the 2026 season, recording a 3-4 record with a 2.76 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 47 strikeouts across his first 45 2/3 innings (eight starts). With a 26.1% strikeout rate, the 34-year-old remains a reliable source of whiffs for fantasy managers. However, Ray could be a logical sell-high candidate.
Ray's has both poor command (10% walk rate) and a tendency to allow the long ball (1.58 HR/9), which points to likely ERA regression. He also got off to a similarly strong start in 2025 before losing steam down the stretch, pitching to a 2.65 ERA in the first half of the season and a 5.54 ERA after the All-Star break. If there's a monster offer out there for Ray, fantasy managers should at least consider moving the 34-year-old while his value is at a relative high point.
Verdict: Top sell-high option among starting pitchers. Ray struggled mightily down the stretch of the 2025 campaign and could face similar struggles once again.
Kris Bubic, SP, Kansas City Royals
Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Kris Bubic is off to a strong start to the 2026 season, as he's posted a 3-1 record with a 3.50 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 47 strikeouts across 46 1/3 innings (eight starts). Bubic has pitched particularly well of late, allowing just five earned runs while striking out 18 in 17 2/3 innings over his last three outings. However, Bubic's profile contains some red flags.
For one, his 12.3% walk rate is unsustainably poor and points to likely WHIP regression. Additionally, Bubic missed the final two months of the 2025 season with a rotator cuff strain in his left shoulder. While he's managed to stay on the mound so far in 2026, his average fastball velocity is down to 92.1 miles per hour, and he's reached 100 innings in a season just once since 2022.
Fantasy managers may be wise to consider selling high on Bubic in the midst of his current hot streak.
Verdict: Even though Bubic has held a high ceiling at times, his underlying marks are not overly promising. Managers should consider flipping Bubic for a much safer starting pitcher.
Other Players to Trade Away
- Michael McGreevy, STL
- Eduardo Rodriguez, ARI
- Mickey Moniak, COL
