ANALYSIS: The fourth-round rookie of our Virginia Tech was a popular sleeper candidate in draft season as the Jacksonville backfield severely disappointed in 2024. After a dominant 2023 season, presumed starter Travis Etienne Jr. took a significant step back in 2024, tallying 558 yards on the ground at a career-low 3.7 YPC. During the first two seasons of his career, Etienne eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards in each season.
Given Etienne's struggles and Tank Bigsby's minimal production in the NFL, many expected the rookie to make a strong push for the starting job. In addition, with former Buccaneers OC Liam Coen being the team's new head coach, he will bring his potent rushing attack that allowed Bucky Irving to break out as a rookie in 2024.
However, Tuten's rookie season got off to a slow start this past weekend. During their victory against the Carolina Panthers, Etienne dominated the backfield as he ran the ball 16 times for 143 yards on the ground. In this contest, Bigsby ran the ball only five times, while Tuten took just three carries.
Seeing Etienne not only lead the time in touches but also show his prior efficiency, suggests he is not in any danger of losing opportunities in the near future. He could eventually take a step back, but for now, Etienne projects to be the workhorse heading into Week 2.
However, on Tuesday evening, the Jaguars traded Bigsby to the Eagles, which will push Tuten to the No. 2 spot. While he may only have a limited role, he now faces much less competition for the No. 2 spot, making him an elite handcuff with high upside. If Etienne were to struggle, Tuten could emerge as a league-winner.
