ANALYSIS: Despite opening the game as the team's No. 2 running back, rookie Dylan Sampson flashed immense upside in his NFL debut on Sunday afternoon. During their loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, the Tennessee product led the team in rushing (29 yards) and brought in all eight of his targets for 64 yards, which was the second-highest mark on the team, only lower than Jerry Jeudy's 66 yards.
This is worth noting as veteran Jerome Ford was given the start, but he only ran the ball six times for a mere eight yards and caught his lone target for -3 yards. Even though Sampson was inefficient on the ground, he looked quite promising as a pass catcher, averaging 8.0 YPR.
Fantasy managers should consider adding him in all formats despite second-round rookie running back Quinshon Judkins nearing a return to the team. During training camp, Judkins was away from the team after being arrested for domestic assault. While his charges were eventually dropped, Judkins did not sign his rookie contract until Saturday.
As a result, he was held out of action on Sunday but is expected to debut in Week 2. However, the league is still looking to conduct its own investigation and could place a suspension on Judkins in the near future.
While Judkins figures to eventually take on the early-down work in the Cleveland backfield, given the upside Sampson flashed as a pass-catcher, he should still have a prominent role on the offense. In addition, if Judkins were to struggle early on or miss time due to a suspension, Sampson could carry high-end RB2 upside for several weeks.
He projects to have high-end RB3/flex value in Week 2, even if Judkins takes on most of the short-yardage opportunities.
