Adam Ottavino Will Languish In The Middle Innings
7 years agoAdam Ottavino was seen as the closer of the future when Colorado signed and placed Greg Holland into the slot in 2017. Ottavino was expected to continue to be a dominant setup man in the meantime, and if Holland stumbled, he’d be able to step in and take over. Instead, Ottavino lost touch with the strike zone. While he still struck out more than 10 batters every nine innings, his walk rate skyrocketed to 6.58/9. Consequently, his ERA and WHIP shot up as well, and Ottavino went from being the closer of the future to barely keeping a job. Over the offseason, Colorado decided that not only would Ottavino be avoided in the ninth inning, but he would also be replaced for the eighth inning and possibly seventh inning as well. The Rockies signed Wade Davis and Bryan Shaw, kept Jake McGee and Mike Dunn, and watched Ottavino’s stock plummet. Things will have to go majorly wrong in Denver before Ottavino sees a save chance, and he’s even lost all his value in holds leagues at this point.
