Shane Van Gisbergen Crashes and Fails to Win at San Diego
Shane Van Gisbergen was the heavy favorite coming into the Anduril 250 Race the Base at Naval Base Coronado's Street Course, but ended up crashing out with a 38th place finish. Van Gisbergen started the race in the pole position and had one of the strongest cars throughout the first stage of the race. He shuffled the lead around with multiple drivers, including Carson Hocevar, Ryan Blaney, and Bubba Wallace. SVG ran inside the top five until he pitted before the end of the first stage on lap 17, which caused him to move back and end the stage in 27th with no stage points. In the second stage, Van Gisbergen shuffled back to the top 10 after others went to pit road and was making progress through the field until he got into Chris Buescher on lap 25. SVG remained in the top 10 until a lap 30 caution. On the ensuing restart, Van Gisbergen was positioned close to the front and made a three-wide move for position, but collided with Austin Hill, setting off a big multicar accident that ended Van Gisbergen's day. As a result, SVG was credited with a finish of 38th and now sits 17th in the regular-season standings, five points behind Ryan Preece for the final position for eligibility for the Chase.
