Seranthony Dominguez 2019 Outlook: Elite Closing Potential Dependent On Opportunity
6 years agoIn May 2018, the Philadelphia Phillies began to show off their shiny new toy in the bullpen, Seranthony Dominguez. He made an impact right away recording a strikeout in each of his first 19 appearances of one inning pitched or more. The rookie forced the Phillies to give him save and hold opportunities, picking up 16 and 14 respectively for the remainder of the year. Averaging 98.4 MPH on his four-seamer, the flame-thrower posted a remarkable 32.0% K% and 15.6% SwStr%. The walks plagued him though, as his 1.60 BB/9 in the first half exploded to a 5.92 BB/9 in the second half, a bit of a common trend among young hurlers with his skill set.
With the right coaching, Dominguez will realize he doesn’t need to get fancy to get batters out, as his Contact% and Zone-Contact% was an outstanding 66.4% and 77.0% respectively, which puts him in elite company. The Phillies signed David Robertson this offseason who will dip into Dominguez’s fantasy value, but it is not entirely bad news for the fire-baller. Matt Breen of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News wrote the following: “The Phillies will not use Robertson as a traditional closer but instead in a variety of late-inning roles.” If this remains true, Dominguez will still see save chances going forward, but it could be a messy situation for fantasy purposes this season. What is certain, is that Dominguez has very high strikeout upside and if he can dial his free passes down with more experience in the league, he has the pedigree of an elite bullpen arm. Last season's 0.93 WHIP and 2.95 ERA, are likely to be improved in 2019. His current ADP in the high 100's is likely to fall with the Robertson signing, and you should still be ready to pounce on him if he falls well past the 200 range.
