Marvin Jones 2018 Outlook: More Luck Or Regression?
6 years agoWhen Marvin Jones signed with the Lions before the 2016 season, many fantasy owners thought the upgrade from Andy Dalton to Matthew Stafford was going to unlock potential we saw while he was in Cincinnati. Double-digit touchdowns in 2013 and an increase in receiving yards each year since his rookie season showed the talent was there. Jones just needed the right situation.
While his first season in Detroit wasn’t what owners hoped for, his second time around did not disappoint. Jones turned in the WR5 season last year in standard leagues. His first season with more than 1,000 receiving yards and nine touchdowns helped propel him to those heights, but the biggest factor was 18 yards per reception, which led the league. Out of everyone that finished as a WR1 last season, Jones had the least amount of receptions with only 61. Jones’ extremely high efficiency is a reason why he is a candidate to regress this year.
Jones is still the deep threat in Detroit. He is going to break off some big plays, but Kenny Golladay is looking to take away some of the Red Zone looks. The Lions may not utilize the tight end position as much and play more three receiver sets with Golladay and Jones on the outside with Tate in the slot. Don’t draft Jones anticipating another WR1 season, but a solid WR2 season is more than in reach.
