Leonard Fournette 2022 Outlook: High-Value Touches Keep Him Squarely in the RB1 Conversation
3 years agoIn 2021, Leonard Fournette was top-5 in red zone carries per game (2.9) and led all running backs (tied with D'Andre Swift) in targets per game with six. Those high-value touches culminated in a top-5 finish last season. In PPR formats, he finished fourth behind just Derrick Henry, Jonathan Taylor, and Austin Ekeler. He did that with Ronald Jones II on the roster. Now, RoJo is in Kansas City and the Buccaneers "replaced him" with third-round running back Rachaad White out of Arizona State. Make no mistake about it, White will battle with Ke'Shawn Vaughn and Giovani Bernard for a complementary role behind Fournette. There won't be any 1A, 1B situation in Tampa Bay, not with Tom Brady under center for his age 44 season. Brady requires a certain level of trust with his running back. That led to Fournette seeing over a 60% snap share in 10 of 14 games played last season. This offseason, we got confirmation that he's a three-down back when offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich said of Fournette, "that's why it's hard to really get him off the field because of what he brings and the connection him and Tom have. I think it's unique. It's not that we're forcing him on that field. It's because he's the best in what we're asking him to do." It wouldn't be that shocking to see Fournette put up another top-5 finish in PPR formats in 2022 given his solidified role in the Tampa Bay offense. At a minimum, he's a back-end RB1.
