Fantasy Football Drop Candidates
Read about fantasy football players to consider dropping for Week 3:
Jayden Daniels, QB, Washington Commanders
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels (elbow) was carted off the field during the first half of Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys. Daniels sustained a dislocated left elbow while attempting to prevent himself from falling on the final play of the first half. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn confirmed the injury, but said there's no fracture, per Tashan Reed.
Before leaving, Daniels completed 11-of-17 passing attempts for 96 yards and a touchdown. He also added 69 additional yards on the ground on seven rushing attempts. The Commanders haven't given a timetable for Daniels yet, but he'll likely miss some time. Marcus Mariota is in line to take over under center going forward.
While it appears Daniels is destined to miss time, managers should view him as a priority IR stash candidate when eligible. While those in smaller leagues without IR spots may not be able to hold him, he should be stashed where possible, as he would continue to hold QB1 upside when he returns to the field.
Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Arizona Cardinals
Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. was hopeful for a bounce-back performance after posting a dud in the season opener. Somehow, Harrison posted a worse performance during this Week 2 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. Harrison was held without a reception on one target during the blowout loss.
The Cardinals were getting crushed in this game, and somehow Harrison still didn't get involved, even in garbage time. It's clear that quarterback Jacoby Brissett prefers his other options in Trey McBride and Michael Wilson. Fantasy managers should have little faith that Harrison is going to offer any significant value against the San Francisco 49ers defense in Week 3.
Marvin Harrison Jr. has been a major early-season bust. While he should be kept out of most lineups, those in 12-team leagues should continue to stash him on the bench for the time being in case he can work out of this slump. If he continues to struggle, he could become a top drop candidate.
Jayden Reed, WR, Green Bay Packers
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed has movement in all his extremities and will remain in New York overnight, according to Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, ESPN Packers Insider Rob Demovsky reports. Reed took a hard hit and remained on the field in a scary scene early on in the Packers' 20-17 overtime victory over the New York Jets.
Reed did not have the chance to make an impact in the Week 2 game and was carted off the field after his teammates took to a knee surrounding him on the field. It was a scary scene and the news that he has movement in his extremities is a positive sign on a potentially devastating head injury. Reed had three catches for 20 yards in the team's Week 1 loss to the Vikings.
While the team has not provided a clear timeline on his recovery, managers should continue to stash Reed where possible. However, like Daniels, those in shallower 10-team leagues without IR spots could consider cutting ties if he faces a lengthy absence.
Quentin Johnston, WR, Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston caught just one of his five targets for seven yards during Sunday's Week 2 loss against the Las Vegas Raiders. For the second week in a row, Johnston handled a respectable target share but couldn't convert his opportunities into production. Through two games, he now has three catches on 11 targets, which translates to an astoundingly low 27.2% catch rate.
The TCU product has taken a backseat to Ladd McConkey on offense, as expected, and he has also been less productive than Tre' Harris so far. Purely based on volume alone, we'd expect Johnston to bounce back as a low-end WR3/flex. However, the low catch rate is certainly worrisome. He's not a must-start fantasy receiver for Week 3 against the Buffalo Bills.
Despite his slow start to the season, most managers should continue to view Johnston as a must-start candidate. However, they should look to keep him on the bench for the foreseeable future.
Caleb Douglas, WR, Miami Dolphins
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Caleb Douglas (ankle) was removed during the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers. He was pulled out in the fourth quarter and didn't return, with the game already a blowout. Douglas was seen leaving the locker room with a boot on his right leg, according to Omar Kelly.
The hope is that the boot is precautionary, but fantasy managers should know more information soon. Douglas was impressive during his NFL debut, but posted a dud in Week 2. He finished with two receptions on three targets for 19 yards. Malik Washington and Chris Bell are likely to see expanded roles in the receiving game if Douglas is forced to miss time.
Managers in formats that require three WR spots should consider stashing Douglas until there is more information regarding his injury. However, those in shallower 10-team leagues can look to drop him for a more established option on the waiver wire.
Josh Jacobs, RB, Green Bay Packers
A Wisconsin judge has rejected a proposed order to permanently seal evidence in the case against Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs, according to Michael Gross and Fox 11 News. Jacobs was convicted last week on two misdemeanor charges stemming from an incident in May, and his ex-girlfriend petitioned the court to seal evidence in the case, including home security footage.
Although the motion was denied, Judge Marc Hammer will continue to review the issue. Jacobs is currently on the Commissioner's Exempt List, and the NFL is attempting to obtain video from the investigation.
Even though there is much uncertainty regarding his timetable, managers in 12-team leagues should still view Jacobs as a priority stash candidate in the event he returns in the second half.
