Howdy, RotoBallers! Can you believe it? The 2023 MLB season has gone by so fast, and there is just over a month left in the fantasy baseball season. We are back with another edition of Nick Mariano's updated 2023 fantasy baseball rankings and tiers for roto leagues (5x5 mixed leagues) as of August 24, 2023. These rankings are being released in August and are looking at rest-of-season fantasy baseball rankings and player values for the rest of this MLB season. We are following many exciting storylines closely, which are all baked into these updated rankings.
We have recently seen some top prospects called up to the big leagues, such as Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Michael Busch, San Francisco Giants left-hander Kyle Harrison, St. Louis Cardinals infielder Masyn Winn, Cincinnati Reds infielder Noelvi Marte, and Los Angeles Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel. Top prospects such as Pete Crow-Armstrong, Ceddanne Rafaela, Jordan Lawlar, Colt Keith, Matt Mervis, Ronny Mauricio, Heston Kjerstad, Coby Mayo, Xavier Edwards, and Robert Gasser patiently await the call to the big leagues.
August Top-300 Updates
Injuries continue to pile up; Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (elbow) has been diagnosed with a torn UCL in his right elbow and won't pitch again this season. However, Ohtani will continue to serve as the team's designated hitter for the rest of the season. More bad news for the Angels: All-Star outfielder Mike Trout (wrist) is returning to the injured list and won't do any baseball activities for the next 10 days. Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran (toe) is in a walking boot and was placed on the 10-day injured list. Kenley Jansen (hamstring), Yordan Alvarez (finger), Stone Garrett (leg), and Sal Frelick (hamstring) are considered day-to-day. Reinforcements are coming as Nolan Gorman (back) is expected to be activated from the injured list on Friday. Texas Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (forearm) is scheduled for another bullpen session, while Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jake Fraley (toe) will work out Triple-A Louisville this weekend.

The 29-year-old is slashing .263/.336/.429 with 13 home runs, 44 RBI, 52 runs, and five stolen bases over 103 games in 2023. Minnesota Twins outfielder Max Kepler is slashing .282/.349/.538 with two home runs, five RBI, and five runs over his last 11 contests. The 30-year-old owns a .332 WOBA and a career-high .505 XSLG in 2023. Kansas City Royals left-hander Cole Ragans has been one of the hottest pitchers in August. The 25-year-old owns a 2.12 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a 13.3 K:9 over 29 2/3 innings during the month.
Some players have been off to blazing starts since the calendar turned August and will look to close out September on a high note. Which of these hot streaks do we take seriously, and which do we put less stock into? Is it time to raise our expectations on certain players and elevate touted prospects into a higher tier for fantasy baseball leagues? How much patience must we show for highly touted players who have struggled recently, especially veterans with proven track records?

Top 300 Fantasy Baseball Rankings - Week 23 Update
These rankings will be updated every week throughout the season, so some of these situations are very fluid. It's not panic time yet, and we may not be ready to elevate hot-starting players into the elite yet either, but it's certainly a good checkpoint for the long fantasy season.
