Is Trey Benson out for the season? When is Trey Benson coming back? The latest Trey Benson injury update and fantasy football outlook heading into Week 9 of 2025.
Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson (knee) seemed to be set to take over the starting running back job from RB James Conner (ankle) when he suffered a season-ending ankle dislocation.
Unfortunately, Benson himself suffered a significant knee injury in Week 4, just one week later. Since then, we've seen RBs Michael Carter, Bam Knight, and Emari Demercado split the backfield workload in Arizona.
Benson hasn't played in a game since his injury, but does that mean he's out for the season or will he come back at some point in 2025? Let's dive in.

Is Trey Benson Out for the 2025 Season?
He's set to miss at least one more game, since he was placed on injured reserve, but it doesn't look like he'll be out for the season. Unfortunately for his fantasy managers, the Cardinals will face the extremely porous Dallas Cowboys rushing defense in Week 9, and Benson won't be active for that game.
But the most recent reporting suggests he could make it back in Week 10. If so, he'll have only missed the required number of games for a player placed on IR, though he'll have had five weeks to rest and heal, since the Cardinals had their bye week in Week 8.
We haven't heard much from the organization about his status, though, so we don't know exactly when he'll come back. We'll have to wait on official confirmation, but an absence of longer than one more week after this doesn't seem likely, as we haven't gotten news that his knee injury is serious.
Trey Benson 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook
It's not 100 percent clear what his role will be when he comes back. It was speculated that he'd take on a workhorse role in the absence of Conner, as he has more draft capital invested in him than any of his backups. He was a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
But in Week 4, the game in which he got the starting role, he logged just eight carries for 35 yards and five catches for 19 yards. It was an oddly inefficient and low-volume role based on what we expected, though it came on 55 percent of offensive snaps.

He certainly has the talent to make explosive plays -- his 4.39-second 40-yard dash speed has shown up nicely on film. And he's forced a high rate of missed tackles this season -- his 0.28 missed tackles forced per attempt ranks No. 1 among running backs that haven't been placed on season-ending injured reserve.
That's coming on a pretty small sample size, but it's indicative that he could be efficient even with larger workloads, which is what we look for in running backs. If you have Benson right now, I'd hang on to him, because he could become valuable down the stretch.

There's simply not a ton of Benson NFL tape out there, but he showed a ton of flashes in his college days, and his ability to elude defenders appears to be translating. Right now, his value is pretty low, so my analysis indicates you should trade for him if you can get a good deal.
If you're hanging on to him, I suggest you keep doing so. Starting RBs are very valuable in fantasy.
