Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride was a college standout at Colorado State, especially during his senior season in 2021. McBride caught 90 passes for 1,121 yards and one touchdown that season and the Cardinals subsequently selected him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
In his rookie season, McBride wasn't utilized a ton in the passing game. He had just 39 catches for 265 yards and one score. However, with Zach Ertz on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, the second-year tight end should see plenty of first-team reps this offseason.
But is McBride injured or healthy? What is his fantasy football outlook? Let's take a look.
Is Trey McBride Injured Or Healthy?
McBride was limited in the Cardinals' practice on Tuesday, but it was encouraging that he still got some reps throughout the day. There isn't a lot of information about the tight end's injury status, though. Head Coach Jonathan Gannon said he is dealing with "nicks and bruises."
The Cardinals are likely taking a careful approach with their young tight end to prevent any further injury. McBride has been working with the first-team offense during training camp as Ertz, who has yet to practice, recovers from an ACL tear that he suffered in November.
There's no reason to panic yet about McBride being limited in practice. His injury is something to monitor in the coming days, but he should be a full participant again very soon. The tight end is currently listed as day-to-day.
Trey McBride 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook
Rookie tight ends don't usually produce big fantasy numbers in their first season and McBride falls under that category. He averaged just 3.84 PPR fantasy points per game with just one game over 10 PPR fantasy points in 2022 (20.8 PPR points in Week 17).
Despite him likely beginning the year as the Cardinals' TE1, it might be hard to count on consistent production from the 23-year-old tight end. For starters, quarterback Kyler Murray figures to be out for a good portion of the season. So, McBride will either be catching passes from Colt McCoy or rookie Clayton Tune to begin the year.
On top of that, Ertz will be back at some point during the season -- meaning McBride would probably move back to the TE2 role in Arizona. The Cardinals' offensive uncertainties and Ertz's return make the tight end hard to draft as a fantasy option, even in the later rounds.
