Is J.K. Dobbins of the Baltimore Ravens injured or healthy? Should you draft J.K. Dobbins in fantasy drafts this season? Joey Pollizze provides an update.
It's been an interesting couple of seasons for Baltimore Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins. After being drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Dobbins ran the ball 134 times for 805 rush yards and nine touchdowns. His 6.01 yards per carry as a rookie ranked fourth all-time for running backs with 100-plus carries in their first year.
Then, Dobbins suffered a season-ending ACL and MCL injury in 2021 and failed to stay healthy in 2022 with the same knee issues. Now the 24-year-old back will enter Ravens' training camp on the physically unable to perform list (PUP).
So, is Dobbins injured or healthy? What is his fantasy outlook this season?
Is J.K. Dobbins Injured Or Healthy?
It's a little surprising to see Dobbins start training camp on the PUP list. He finished the 2022 season strong following an arthroscopic knee surgery in Week 7. The Ravens running back had 12-plus carries and 50-plus rush yards in five straight games to end the year, including 17 touches and 105 scrimmage yards in Baltimore's Wild Card game loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Dobbins did miss the Ravens' voluntary offseason team activities earlier this offseason. But reports said the running back wasn't participating due to contract disputes with the team.
Dobbins' trip to the PUP list for the second straight season is likely the Ravens taking a careful approach with their young running back. He played in just eight games in 2022. This decision, though, is certainly something to watch, especially since the team just signed veteran Melvin Gordon III on Friday.
J.K. Dobbins Fantasy Football Outlook
It's hard to evaluate Dobbins' most recent fantasy season. He missed nine games due to knee pain, and it appeared he wasn't fully up to speed yet from his ACL injury. Still, the former Ohio State running back averaged 10.15 PPR fantasy points per game with three top-20 PPR RB finishes.
Dobbins also put up similar fantasy numbers in 15 games as a rookie. He finished as the RB23 in PPR formats while averaging 11.1 points per game in 2020. This season, the Ravens running back could get back to being a solid RB2 in all fantasy formats.
It's still too early to panic about Dobbins starting training camp on the PUP list. He can come off at any time, and this move was likely precautionary. The signing of Gordan also shouldn't scare anyone away from drafting Dobbins. The Ravens made similar moves with Kenyan Drake and Mike Davis last season too.
